background
Subaru
has released some impressive models this year like the 2021 Forester that’s made the top-10 compact SUVs list on every major review site. But, is Subaru’s EyeSight technology defective on newer models?
The automaker faces a second class-action lawsuit that involves several new models equipped with the EyeSight driver assist, according to
Torque News
. Here’s what you need to know about the potential defects, which vehicles are potentially impacted, and other safe car options.
Subaru has a reputation for making some of the safest cars on the road.

What is the Subaru EyeSight technology?

Subaru EyeSight is standard on the 2021 Subaru Forester, 2022 Outback, 2022 Ascent, and 2022 Legacy models. It includes technology like autonomous emergency braking (AEB) and lane-keeping systems.
According to Subaru’s
website
, EyeSight uses stereo cameras mounted at the top of the windshield to monitor traffic movement and optimize cruise control.
The company reported that the driver assists have been found to reduce the rate of rear-end crashes with injuries by up to 85%. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave the new models a "Superior" rating in front crash prevention when equipped with EyeSight.
But the new lawsuit says that EyeSight safety technology is faulty on the newer models.

A class-action lawsuit was filed against Subaru in New Jersey federal court. The class-action says that Subaru concealed defects with their safety technology to boost profits on their popular models.
Several plaintiffs from six states filed the lawsuit. They claimed their vehicle’s AEB system either failed to stop the vehicle when needed or it was triggered randomly by things like a shadow or rain.
It can be dangerous for your vehicle to suddenly brake when there are no actual objects on the road. But so far, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has not issued any defective Subaru EyeSight recalls.
Torque News also wrote that while Subaru is accused of inflating their prices on popular models, the Forester, Outback, and most Crosstreks are some of the most affordable. It’s hard to find cheaper SUVs with standard safety features available.
It’s important to note that there are thousands of Subaru vehicles on the road with EyeSight technology installed that don’t have reported problems. Subaru’s safety technology is still one of the best systems available.

Other options for safe vehicles

If you’re in the market for a new Subaru vehicle, but this lawsuit has you worried, there are many other great options for safe SUVs.
