The latest Rolls-Royce Boat Tails are tailor-made to specifications from the buyer, based on a process called coachbuilding. According to Rolls-Royce CEO, Torsten Muller-Otvos, coachbuilding has been integral to the brand's image since its founding in the 1920s.
It gives customers a better appreciation of the production process and gives them a unique model to cherish. However, this privilege comes with a hefty price.
Only three of these new Boat Tails have been produced so far. Their customization doesn’t just include things like color changes or engine upgrades.

The Rolls-Royce Boat Tail is built on the same platform as the Phantom which is the automaker's flagship sedan. The two share the same powertrain, but almost every other part, including 1,813 elements, is newly developed for the Boat Tail.
The first customized Boat Tail showcased by The Bucks Herald had a unique trunk which held two fridges underneath. The trunk would open up in a buttery-fly style, and a parasol would extend from between the trunk panels.
For another pair of Boat Tail owners, Rolls-Royce provided a matching set of designer watches. These could be worn either on the wrist or placed into the Boat Tail's dashboard to use as a clock.
The detailed and unique customization is one of the main attraction points for consumers who have money to spare on a luxury car commission. Rolls-Royce revealed a one-off Sweptail in 2017 which spurred demand for this type of coachbuilding service.
