The Revival of the Acura NSX–With One Key Change?

background
With
Acura
phasing out the current Type S, the NSX is coming to the end of a significant leg of its journey. Fans of the vehicle need not despair, however. There are signs that the NSX may eventually return for sale in a new, electric version.
If it does, it will be entering into an increasingly hot electric vehicle (EV) market.

The current Acura NSX is already pretty awesome

The Acura NSX combines power and luxury, and it could be going electric.
As
CNET
reports, the current NSX is a hybrid model, which isn't just happenstance. Acura Vice President Jon Ikeda confirmed as much when he told The Drive at Monterey Car Week, "If you notice, we make an NSX when there's something we want to say. The first-gen was gas. Second-gen was a hybrid. There's gonna be another one."
The NSX Type S comes with quite a hefty price tag, but that's no surprise, given that it's a truly high end car. Priced from $171,495, it's an extremely limited-edition, hand-built "supercar," with only 350 units available in total.
A great vehicle for the sports car enthusiast with cash to burn, it offers 600 horsepower and 492 pound-feet of torque for what
Acura
deems an "adrenaline-fueled drive."

The next NSX may be electric

Ikeda's words make clear that the NSX will be returning, which is great news for the sports car’s fans. What he only implies, however, is that the next iteration of the high-end Acura will be electric rather than hybrid.
If this prediction turns out to be correct, it will mean that Acura is joining a trend that has been successful among other automakers. Take
Volvo
, for example. Its Recharge lineup of plug-in hybrid or fully electric cars has recently been outperforming many of the rest of its models in terms of sales.

Electric is the way of the future for auto manufacturers

MORE: How Can Big Electric Vehicles Offer More Range?
Many auto manufacturers have actually been in the electric vehicle game for quite some time, but lately, it seems that the movement has really been gaining traction among consumers.
This electric trend is due at least in part to the emphasis that the Biden administration has put on electric vehicles through the
Electric Vehicles Freedom Act
(EVFA).
With the EVFA, the administration hopes to fund the construction of thousands of EV charging stations throughout the United States and will offer tax credits to promote the purchase of EVs. Manufacturers are certainly aware of this push and are rushing to take advantage of the expected upcoming shift in consumer behavior.
A simple glance at
Car and Driver
's list of new EVs in the works shows just how many manufacturers have the development of eco-friendly vehicles on their radar. From well-known brands like Audi and Cadillac, to startups such as Bollinger, automakers are working furiously to wean their vehicles from fossil fuels and reduce carbon emissions.
Purchasing an EV also opens up the potential for discounts on car insurance for green vehicles. If you're shopping for car insurance for your electric or hybrid car,
