Remembering Lamborghini's Ostentatious 50th Birthday

In May of 1963, a former tractor-builder named Ferruccio Lamborghini officially threw his hat in the luxury sports car ring. Unimpressed by the issues he was having with his Ferrari, he did the only reasonable thing: start a rival company.
Using the wealth he had amassed from tractor sales and other manufacturing pursuits, he purchased land for a factory in the town of Sant’Agata Bolognese, in the north of Italy.
Here are more details about the history of the brand, and a throwback to its 50th anniversary Aventador LP720-4 50 Anniversario special edition model.
The Aventador LP720-4 50 Anniversario was an extravagant car built for Lamborghini’s 50th anniversary.

A brief history of Lamborghini

The first model that
Lamborghini
sold, the 350 GT, was a beauty—slim and sleek like its future progeny, minus the flattened roof.
It was the 1968 Espada, however, that really showcased the direction that Lamborghini would eventually take. Its monocoque chassis (meaning “single shell,” where the hull is supported by external elements, like an egg) would be used again and again in various Lamborghini models to come.
As the models of the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s were released, the familiar sleek sports car of the 21st century evolved and emerged. By the time the new millennium rolled around, the brand had hit its stride. The Murciélago from 2001 is basically an aesthetic match for any of the models that came around after it.

The heritage of Lamborghini was something that company executives were keeping in mind when they presented a special edition 50th anniversary car in 2013.
Car and Driver
took a look at the Aventador LP720-4 50 Anniversario, an extravagantly outfitted 50th birthday present.
This vehicle boasts all the trappings of the Aventador, plus features on the front and back that increase its aerodynamic properties by more than 50%. The enormous amount of real estate that the diffuser takes up on the bumper shows that this car is designed to cut through the air efficiently.
The engine on this model is another mind-blowing detail. The typical Aventador can expect 691 horsepower, and the special edition boosts that to 710. It reaches an impressive top speed of 217 mph.
The Aventador LP720-4 50 Anniversario was available in the brand’s top-selling hue of all time: yellow. Only 100 of these head-turning models were made, according to Car and Driver. Lamborghini was serious about a “special edition” vehicle.
