You might assume that the most reliable American car brands are Ford and Chevy, they are the most popular American car brands after all.
However, Consumer Reports has found that neither can claim to be our most reliable domestic brand. That particular accolade goes to Buick, which appears to be focusing on quality over quantity with a streamlined lineup for 2022.

The most reliable American car brand

Each year,
Consumer Reports
asks its members about problems they have experienced with their vehicles in the past 12 months.
Researchers weigh the severity and frequency of these problems to create a reliability score for each model of car coming out the following year.
Looking ahead to 2022, Buick is deemed the most reliable American brand, coming in fifth place overall behind Japanese brands Lexus, Mazda, Toyota, and Infiniti.
Here are the latest reliability rankings according to Consumer Reports (sorted American car brands only):

What makes Buick cars so reliable?

In recent years, Buick has dramatically cut down on the number of cars in its lineup, and is only selling SUVs.
Utility vehicles typically have good reliability anyway, and by having a smaller lineup, Buick is able to ensure high quality builds.
In terms of 2022 models, the Encore and Envision both scored well over average, with the latter considered the most reliable luxury compact SUV on the market. The Enclave has below-average reliability, but its middling score is not enough to dethrone Buick.
The best-selling American brands, Chevrolet and Ford, are far behind Buick in terms of reliability.
Chevy has some of the best reliability scores among its 2022 lineup (the Trailblazer SUV and Trax SUVs both have top grades), but also the worst, with the new Chevrolet Tahoe receiving horrible reliability ratings.
Ford’s overall reliability has improved this year, thanks to high scores for the 2022 Bronco Sport, Mustang Mach-E, and Ranger.
Unfortunately, the redesigned F-150, and the Escape and Explorer SUVs, all have poor predicted reliability, leaving Ford in 8th place in the domestic reliability rankings, and 18th overall.
