The Jeep Magneto Won't Be Your Typical Off-Roader

While the chip shortage and supply chain bottlenecks have caused serious problems for the automotive industry, that hasn't slowed down innovations at
Jeep
. Recently, they showed off the Jeep Magneto, and it is probably one of the biggest innovations to come from Jeep in recent memory.
The Detroit automaker continues to build on its historic
reputation of innovative off-roading vehicles
. What makes the Jeep Magneto so special? It's a fully electric Wrangler designed for off-roading.
The Jeep Magneto takes off-roading to new levels.

The Jeep Magneto is not your typical EV

While converting most gas cars to EV involves a complete redesign, Jeep tried to keep everything intact from the Wrangler Rubicon on the new Magneto. To oversimplify, they removed the gas engine and replaced it with an electric motor and batteries.
Anyone who has even done a small amount of off-roading knows how important a manual transmission is. Knowing that most Wrangler drivers love going off the beaten path, Jeep decided to keep a manual transmission. This is quite rare, as the only other major EVs with multispeed transmissions are the
Porsche Taycan
and Audi E-Tron GT.
The fun doesn't stop there, as Magneto's electric engine has comparable stats to the Wrangler's 3.6-liter V-6 engine. According to
MotorTrend
, the Magneto can produce 285 hp and 260 lb-foot of torque, versus the Wrangler's 285 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque
In short, the Magneto only loses a negligible amount of power when compared to its gas-burning counterpart.

When will the Jeep Magneto be available?

MORE: Where Is the Jeep Wrangler Secret Compartment?
Hopefully, you're not too excited about the Jeep Magneto. As of now, it is just a concept car. It has no official release date. Mark Allen, head of Jeep's design studio, said it could become available to the public in the 'following years' as quoted by
Electric Vehicle Web
If we had to bet, we would be surprised if it hits showrooms before 2024.
The Magneto does have some big question marks that need to be answered before it becomes available to the public. While it is a fantastic off-roading vehicle, Jeep has yet to disclose what its battery range is. A very crucial detail for any prospective buyer. While it is a cool concept car, it is just that. A concept car.

The future of fully electric SUVs

Jeep isn't the only company tinkering with EV SUVs. Nearly every car company is scrambling to bring a fully electric EV to the market as soon as possible. Granted, most of these EV SUVs are more so designed for the suburbs instead of off-road courses that Wrangler drivers love.
While there are some EV SUVs on the market, they are better suited for shopping trips to Costco instead of traversing the Moab desert. With that said, there aren't a lot of fully electric SUVs available to buy right now. Sure, there are a lot of promises of new EV SUVs coming very soon, and dozens of SUV hybrids, but fully electric SUVs are currently scarce.
Our favorite fully electric SUVs are the Ford Mustang Mach-E (which may become the preferred vehicle of Michigan State Troopers), the Tesla Model X, and the Tesla Model Y.
