background
Mazda has had a great year. The brand got its first top spot in the Consumer Reports reliability rankings for 2021 and saw growth in sales across the board. A consistent fan favorite has been the Mazda 6, a sleek sedan that evokes the luxury of more upmarket models, minus the sticker shock.
Sadly, the brand has decided to suspend the Mazda 6 for 2022, but perhaps for a good reason—they’re working on a model for 2023 that is creating a ton of buzz. Read on to see what we could be looking forward to.

The old Mazda 6

The Mazda 6 models we’ve seen so far have been great fun. The 2021 model sports a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a respectable 28 mpg, according to
Consumer Reports
.
It drives well and did its part in helping Mazda win reliability accolades for 2021. Previous models get more miles to the gallon, but the cabin experience did not impress Consumer Reports as much. Overall, critics and consumers alike were fans of this offering.
Mazda did have one unusual issue with a 6 model.
CarBuzz
reminded us of the 2009 version, whose fuel line odor attracted yellow sac spiders. The nests they built forced a recall of about 65,000 vehicles. But other than this odd blip, the 6 has made a warm impression.

What’s new with the 2023 Mazda 6?

The new Mazda 6 is leaving more humble roots behind and targeting consumers who want a sporty rear-drive sedan. It will no longer be a front-drive, run-of-the-mill car, as reported by
Motor Trend
.
The shift to rear-wheel drive (RWD) means better acceleration. It also offers a new eight-speed automatic transmission coupled with an option to use Mazda’s i-ACTIV AWD (all-wheel drive) that gives drivers plenty of opportunities to experiment with driving styles.
Mazda will also include an electric component in the 2023 6. The 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo Skyactiv-X gas engine will reportedly be supported by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. Motor Trend speculates that the 2023 Mazda 6 will host some new patented technology from Mazda: twin turbochargers that run off of an electric supercharger. These add-ins may give Mazda an edge over the competition.

Other contenders in the sports sedan market

Who else is in the race for most appealing RWD sedan? The BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes C-Class are among the models that the new Mazda 6 competes with, according to Motor Trend. Both of these vehicles are well-established leaders in their category and have the advantage of long-standing brand recognition in the sports sedan arena.
But the 2023 Mazda 6 may just measure up. The model has a strong precedent for a fun, safe driving experience. Buyers will appreciate its intricate internal combustion system, which purports to reduce emissions, and eye-catching design. Japan gets a look at it in early 2022, and we’ll wait to see whether it comes back to the U.S.
