The data is showing that if you own a Ford vehicle you might be at a greater risk for
car theft
. Specifically, this may be true  if you own a Ford full-size pickup truck—because this car was the number one most targeted car by thieves for the second year in a row.
The data was collected by the National Insurance Crime Bureau on their annual “Hot Wheels” report on car theft. Here, we’re breaking down what the list is and how Ford keeps ending up at the top. We’ll also go over the
car insurance
you need before you fall victim to car theft.

What is the NICB “Hot Wheels” report on car theft?

The National Insurance Crime Bureau, or the NICB for short,
releases an annual Hot Wheels report
to identify the top 10 most stolen vehicles in the United States each year. The NICB examines vehicle theft data submitted by law enforcement to the National Crime Information Center to determine the vehicle make, model, and year stolen the most in each calendar year.
To prevent your car from being stolen, the NICB puts out a list of four layers of protection from car theft with their Hot Wheels report. The layers of protection include:
  • Common sense: The NICB recommends locking doors and windows and removing keys from your vehicle to prevent car theft.
  • Warning devices: The second layer of protection is to invest in a visible or audible warning device that will deter thieves from your car, like audible alarms or brake locks.
  • Immobilizing devices: This layer of protection takes car safety one step further, by not allowing thieves to bypass your ignition and hotwire your vehicle. This includes smart keys and kill switches.
  • Tracking devices: The final layer of protection is a tracking device, which emits a signal to police if your vehicle is stolen and increases the chances of recovery.

Ford tops the car theft list

This year, the full-size Ford pickup truck topped the list of most stolen cars for the second year in a row. Following the Ford pickup truck was the Chevrolet full-size pickup truck, which knocked the formerly second place Honda Civic from its ranks.
The full-size Ford pickup truck had a 13% increase from 2019 in car thefts with 44,014 thefts in 2020. The most common year stolen was 2006. The second place full sized Chevrolet pickup truck saw a 25.7% increase from 2019 with 40,968 thefts. For Chevrolet, the most common model year stolen was 2004.
Fox News
reports that David Glawe, president and CEO of the NICB, stated that car thefts in general have increased in 2020, in part due to the pandemic, economic downturn, law enforcement realignment, depleted school programs, and owner complacency.
