Ford won two of 2021’s Kelley Blue Book (KBB) Cost to Own awards for the F-150 and Ranger. That might not mean much to those outside the auto industry, but if you’re looking for a
truck you can afford to insure, it’s the kind of recognition to look for.

Is Kelley Blue Book’s ‘Cost to Own’ award a big deal?
KBB’s ‘Cost to Own’ award is more than an ego boost for automakers. It’s meant to help you make an informed decision when buying a vehicle. Each year, one model from each of the 22 vehicle categories receives the award for having the lowest cost to own from its group.
To calculate the best cost to own, KBB combines the out-of-pocket expenses and projected depreciation expected for each vehicle within its first five years on the road.
KBB’s projected cost to own a 2021 Ford F-150 is $48,456. That’s $4,274 less than the average full-sized pickup. The 2021 Ford Ranger also had an impressively low cost to own, landing at $40,532—$2,308 less than the average midsize pickup.
What makes the Ford F-150 a great truck?
The F-150 has been the best-selling pickup truck in America for over four decades. It’s managed to stay on top for so long because of its ability to evolve with consumer needs.
Ford continues to increase the F-150’s capabilities every year. The 2021 F-150 has the best towing capacity, the best payload capacity, and the most powerful engine of any full-sized pickup of the year.
The company has also improved the F-150’s fuel efficiency by offering
hybrid powertrains. This gives the truck an impressive fuel economy average of 21 mpg.
New features also include an onboard generator option and a new infotainment system. An off-road version of the truck called the Tremor will be available this summer.
The Ford Ranger is small but mighty
While the F-150 can come with all the bells and whistles you want, the Ford Ranger offers a low cost to own by keeping things simple. The engine/transmission is the same for every version of the truck. Only two cab and bed sizes are available.
But the limited options don’t negatively affect the midsized truck’s abilities. The Ranger has the best towing capacity in its class without a diesel engine. The model also sits on top of its class for its payload capacity and boasts a fuel economy average of 23 mpg.
Like the F-150, the Ranger can also be upgraded to the Tremor package if you’re looking for something suited for off-road driving.
Low cost to own means you save money
