As
Ford
celebrates the Expedition’s 25th anniversary in 2022, they’re brushing up a new look for the model. At the Detroit Motor Bella show, Ford revealed that the SUV is getting its first visual refresh since 2017.
According to
Car and Driver
, updates to the Expedition will include changes to the fascia, high-tech upgrades, and even a new Timberline trim with exciting off-road abilities.
The 2022 Expedition will feature a new Timberline trim level.

What's new for the 2022 Ford Expedition?

For the interior, the 2022 Expedition will have completely redesigned front fascias and dashboards, standard 12-inch infotainment screens, and redesigned dashboards. Upgraded materials will give the inside a stylish and comfortable feel. The 2022 model offers impressive space, with a third row big enough for adults and lots of interior cubby room.
The new Timberline trim features a more rugged look, 33-inch tires, and increased ride height, good for outdoor activities and off-roading
There will be six trim levels for the 2022 Expedition. This includes the XL, XLT, Limited, Timberline, King Ranch, and Platinum. The Expedition’s standard engine is a 380-horsepower twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 with 470 lb-ft of torque.
The new hands-free driving tool BlueCruise will also come on the 2022 Expedition, though only on the top-tier Platinum level. The Limited trim will feature a Stealth Performance package with a sport-tuned suspension, dark exterior coloring, and an upgraded version of Ford’s twin-turbo V-6.

How does the BlueCruise system work?

BlueCruise will allow hands-free driving on certain highways, which Ford calls Blue Zones. BlueCruise uses a monitoring system to ensure the driver’s eyes are on the road in case of an emergency or if they move out of a Blue Zone.
Other features incorporated into BlueCruise are adaptive cruise control and a reconfiguring gauge cluster to signal when BlueCruise is engaged. You need a subscription to access this system, and it’s only available to those with the Platinum trim.

Potential drawbacks of the new Expedition

There are a few minor issues with the new Expedition. Car and Driver reported some trouble with the steering feel and accuracy, calling the handling “ungainly.” So, if you’re looking for a more agile SUV, this one might not be the right choice. However, the independent rear suspension on the Expedition makes for a smooth ride if not particularly nimble or responsive.
Car and Driver also said that, in their testing, Ford’s Ecoboost V-6 engine got fewer miles per gallon on average than the V-8, despite Ford claiming the opposite.
The standard Expedition XL is expected to start at around $53,000. Ford is looking to release the new 2022 model late this year, though no official date has been set.
