Mercedes-Benz intends to bolster its audio systems using Dolby Atmos. In a press statement, the company claimed that the new sound system gives its car owners a state-of-the-art concert hall-like experience. However, the new audio system will only be found on select high-end models.
Carmakers have been adding high-tech gadgets to their cabins to enhance riding experiences and provide top-quality entertainment for road trips or drive-in movie theaters. Dolby Atmos is a revolutionary sound system that is guaranteed to make Mercedes rides more entertaining.
Which Mercedes cars will have Dolby Atmos?
Mercedes intends to introduce the new immersive Dolby Atmos that uses the latest MBUX interface and 3D or 4D sound systems in their cars. It will first be available in the 2022 Maybach S-Class models. We expect the system to be standard on all models in the near future once the MBUX interface is added to all of them.
According to Dolby, Atmos will use a 4D sound system that is already installed in the car. This system includes 31 speakers that are spread across the cabin. Six of these speakers create a 3D sound effect due to their placement.
An additional four speakers, known as near-ear speakers, are placed in the front seats to amplify the sound that gets to the passengers' ears. Each seat comes with two sound transducers, also called sound exciters, to bounce the sound waves. The system has a 1.85-liter subwoofer for a mind-blowing boom.
All these parts are connected to two power amplifiers, which do the audio processing. This system is guaranteed to provide an all-around, vertically-enhanced sound field that will excite your ears, no matter what you are listening to.
Mercedes is not the first carmaker to include a revolutionary sound system in its high-end models. A while back, Lucid Air introduced the surround sound system to its electric sedan. The carmaker used a 21-speaker system that it calls Surreal Sound.
Dolby Atmos features
According to Sound Guys, Dolby Atmos is an improvement to the 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound systems. It adds a third dimension, the overhead, to enhance the traditional setup.
The system bounces the sound on the ceiling of the car cabin to create an auditory atmosphere with amazing scenic sounds. A key feature of the Dolby Atmos system is its configuration of sound objects.
This configuration is similar to what you hear in cinema theaters. Different speakers placed at different angles in the room give you the sense of a floating sound. The mobile Atmos system also works with VR to provide a realistic 3D experience in sound and video.
Mercedes combines luxury with an incredible sound experience
Mercedes has a reputation for luxury and comfort. Before introducing the Dolby Atmos, it already had an incredible MBUX system that gave a 3D effect.
The first vehicle to enjoy the new immersive sound system is the 2022 Maybach luxury sedan. It combines the latest tech with best-in-class comfort and performance. The AWD four-door sedan is equipped with a 6.0-liter front engine that makes 603 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque.
This engine is mated with a nine-speed automatic transmission and comes with twin-turbo motors for enhanced power. Its interiors are graced with authentic leather seats with neck and shoulder heating. The cabin has lots of legroom, with leg rests that offer you a calf massage on demand.
