It’s an age-old rivalry between the Dodge Challenger and the Ford Mustang over sales numbers—one that started more than 50 years ago. The 2021 models of both of these cars prove that the competition is still going strong today. These two have been, and continue to be, the hottest muscle cars on the market.
While the Ford Mustang has come out on top in terms of sales for the last six years, the Dodge Challenger is looking to give the vehicle a run for its money in 2021, Fox News reports. Here are the numbers crunched and the lowdown on both cars.
It looks like the Dodge Challenger might outsell the Mustang for the first time in six years in 2021.

Dodge Challenger vs. Mustang: Which is ahead in sales now?

The Ford Mustang has outsold the Dodge Challenger for the last six years in the muscle car showdown. But 2021 just might end its long winning streak, because the Dodge Challenger has officially outsold the Mustang after the first nine months of 2021. The Challenger looks like it’s in a great position to steal the Mustang’s title.
Right around June, the Mustang looked like it was going to pull off more sales for the seventh year in a row, as the Challenger was trailing the Mustang by about 1,082 sales in the United States. Since then, the Challenger showed it came to play, as it has sold a whopping 44,142 cars as of mid-October, compared to the Mustang’s 41,065.
Unless Mustang really pulls off a miracle, it looks like the Dodge Challenger will dethrone it, but we won’t have another official update until the race is over at the end of this year.

About the 2021 Dodge Challenger

The 2021 Dodge Challenger starts around $28,295. Kelley Blue Book describes the car as a “classic retro design that looks good,” plus it comes equipped with four-wheel drive, a roomy back seat, and a large trunk for storage. The Challenger has the latest and greatest technology, like voice recognition and UConnect.
Where the Challenger lacks is in fuel economy, as well as having poor visibility and no convertible body style. Plus, the interior might feel a bit cheaper compared to other sports cars, which might be a deal breaker for true car enthusiasts.

About the 2021 Ford Mustang

The Ford Mustang has a starting price just under the Dodge Challenger, coming in at around $27,155. Unlike the Challenger, the Mustang has good fuel economy and a convertible body style. In addition to that, it also has a 10-speed automatic available, and similar advanced technology to the Challenger.
The Mustang doesn’t have the roomy back seats and large storage space that the Challenger does. Instead, it’s close quarters in the back and it can be difficult for passengers to get in and out. But, Hot Cars reports that the newest generation of the Mustang has been rated by J.D. Power as one of the most reliable sports cars on the market and the interior feels well-made.

Bottom line: Dodge Challenger vs. Mustang

Both the Dodge Challenger and the Mustang come with tons of perks and benefits. While it’s looking like the Challenger might win out in the sales competition this year, the best car for you depends on your preferences.
The Dodge Challenger is a larger vehicle with a roomy backseat and great storage plus a flashy exterior, but it has poor visibility and cheaper interior design. The Ford Mustang is smaller without a ton of backseat space, but it’s a reliable ride with impressive design.
In terms of muscle cars you aren’t going to get any better than these two powerful, fast cars.
