If you’re shopping for a new truck, and you’re not sure what the terms “crew cab” and “quad cab” mean, we’ve got you covered.
These types of trucks have subtle but crucial differences from regular cab trucks. Here’s what you need to know to help you choose the right truck.
Crew and quad cabs have a different number of seats and doors than regular cab trucks.

Basic cab traits and types

Trucks generally come with two doors and seating for the driver and a passenger. You can seat up to three people in it if the front seat is a bench. These types of single-seat row cabins are often called regular cabs.
Don Johnson Motors
explains that crew and quad cab trucks differ from regular cab trucks by the number of seats and doors. They both have four doors and a second row of seats.
According to
Car and Driver
, manufacturers sometimes call quad cabs other names such as extended cabs. They just want the cab style name to fit their brand. Either way, the second set of seats is a big factor for many people when they choose a truck.

The quad cab gets its name from the fact that it has four doors, since “quad” means “four.” The second set of doors is generally smaller than the first set in quad cabs, and the second row of seating is relatively small.
The quad cab will seat five unless the front seat is a bench. Then it can fit six people, though it is not always a comfortable ride for people. It’s best for people who don't normally travel with more than three passengers.
Quad cabs tend to be lighter and smaller than pickup trucks with crew cabins. This means that they are often cheaper than crew cabs, and they are more efficient.
The crew cabin's back seats will generally be bigger than quad cabs. These back seats sometimes come with comfort features such as armrests.
The second set of doors in a crew cab will be larger than typical for a quad cabin. You might need to use the back seat for storage because the flatbed will be smaller than if you had a regular or quad cab.

Crew cabs are great for comfortably traveling with your family or work crew, so you might prefer it if you have to go long distances with a crowd. However, a quad cab gives you a bigger truck bed, so it might be the better option if you haul a lot of things alone.
The Nissan 2022 Frontier SV has a crew cab and Consumer Reports was pretty fond of it. The 2022 Ram 1500 TRX has a crew cab too.
