Car brands
gain popularity through critical reviews, but the majority of drivers don't consider themselves car people. Oftentimes, they're inspired to buy their cars based on ones they've seen in movies or television.
Who doesn't want to have a stylish BMW like James Bond’s Z3, or the iconic DeLorean from Back to the Future?
Car sales would continue to trend upward throughout the ‘90s, possibly due to some iconic films at the time.
MotorBiscuit
takes us on a trip down memory lane with some totally fly flicks and some wicked wheels.
We can’t even comprehend what the world is like after the ‘90s. What year is it anyway?

A ‘90s classic: ‘Ronin’

While not focused on cars, Ronin follows the tale of secret agents trying to procure a briefcase. The film is applauded for its many realistic car chase scenes.
The first chase showcased a Mercedes-Benz 450 SEL 6.9, a souped-up version of the S-Class wagon from the ‘70s. This iconic vehicle was easy to handle and could reach 60 mph in 7.1 seconds with its 250-horsepower V8 engine.
Another car featured prominently in the film was a 1991 BMW 535i. This one is powered by an inline-six capable of 208 horsepower and 225 lb-ft of torque.
On this model, the interior is a striking shade of blue complemented by real wood trim. Robert DeNiro is shown chasing down this car in a Peugeot 406, a family sedan that was only available overseas.
We also can't forget the 1996 Audi S8 D2 that chases a Citroen through the countryside and into the city. This car is the most powerful of the lot, producing 335 horsepower and reaching 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

A breakdown of the cars in ‘Breakdown’

This is a thriller about a married couple who encounters a trail of problems after almost hitting a pickup truck.
The truck featured during the final thrilling chase scene is a 1983 Chevy C-Series Custom Deluxe. It's a solid shield for the couple as they evade two other aggressive drivers.
One of them drives a 1972 Cadillac Sedan DeVille, one of the sportiest cars in its class at the time. While not the quickest, it still packed 220 horsepower and a smooth-shifting hydramatic transmission.
The other car is an angry red 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am, which could produce up to 200 horsepower.

The one that screams, or sings, the ‘90s: ‘Wayne's World’

This is another film you wouldn't typically associate with cars, but it does have that classic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' singalong scene. It takes place inside a 1976 AMC Pacer, which definitely has a strange appearance by today's standards.
While not particularly powerful, it stands out with its light blue paint job decorated with flame decals. The movie's bad guy gets a much more impressive car, a 1966 Pontiac GTO Convertible 360-horsepower, and a V8 engine.
This comedy film stars the late Robin Williams as a used car salesman, though it received mixed reviews.
Still, it brought many cool automobiles to the screen, including a black 1989 Cadillac Allanté. It focused more on comfort than performance, with luxury features like a Bose stereo and digital dashboard.
A few Plymouths were also featured in the movie, like a blue-and-white 1982 Gran Fury. Its solid drivetrain made it a popular pick for police officers, though there aren't any famous chases in the film.
It's hard to say whether these movies contributed to the success of certain models, especially the older ones. Still, a few people were likely inspired to get cars after witnessing those adrenaline-filled chase sequences or with Robin Williams talking them up.
