Avoid the 2021 Nissan Armada for an ‘Under the Radar’ Toyota

The team at Consumer Reports have been busy testing the most popular models, and after analyzing the results, they have compiled a comprehensive guide to the best and worst SUVs on the market.
While the results don’t throw up too many shocks, one surprising piece of advice is to avoid the 2021 Nissan Armada, which has sold very well since its release, in favor of an ‘under the radar’
Toyota
SUV.
Can the 2021 Nissan Armada really stack up to other full-size SUVs?

What’s wrong with the 2021 Nissan Armada?

In ranking the cars,
Consumer Reports
(CR) looked at road test scores, predicted reliability, key safety features, and owner satisfaction.
While the 2021 Nissan Armada did reasonably well on its road test, scoring 69/100, it was marked down for poor emergency handling, terrible fuel economy (averaging just 14 mpg in CR’s tests), and a poor greenhouse gas emissions rating.
The Armada’s cabin was praised for being spacious, but perhaps as a direct result of this, it's a far reach to some buttons and knobs.
Unsurprisingly for an SUV, the 2021 Nissan Armada has excellent safety features, but CR awarded it a lower-than-average reliability score of two out of five. This is partly based on the historical performance of similar Nissans, but also because the Armada has already been subject to a recall due to fuel pump failures.
Finally, CR points out that only 58% of 2021 Nissan Armada owners say they would buy one again. This translates to a predicted owner satisfaction score of two out of five.
Overall, the Armada scores a pretty flat 55/100, placing it in seventh place in Consumer Reports’ large SUVs rankings.

When recommending alternatives to the 2021 Nissan Armada, Consumer Reports suggests an ‘under the radar’ Toyota Sequoia. It is classed as under the radar, because it hasn’t sold as well as the Nissan.
Interestingly, the Sequoia actually fared worse than the Armada in the road test, scoring just 60/100. Like the Nissan, it has poor fuel economy, a poor greenhouse gas emission rating, and bad emergency handling.
Where the 2021 Toyota Sequoia scores well is with an exceptionally smooth transmission, unparalleled seat comfort, and a huge trunk/cargo area.
Like other SUVs in its class, the Sequoia has excellent safety features, and it surpasses the Armada with a very good predicted reliability score of four out of five. It has not had any recalls, and benefits from Toyota’s reputation as a very reliable brand.
It also scored well in predicted owner satisfaction, receiving a four out of five. Impressively, 74% of 2021 Toyota Sequoia owners say they would buy one again.
All of this adds up to give the Sequoia a very solid overall score of 68/100, placing it second in Consumer Reports’ large SUVs rankings. Top spot goes to the 2021 Ford Expedition, but there is only a one point difference.
