How are your
New Year’s Resolutions
going? If you’re already having trouble sticking to them, don’t worry—you’re not alone! It’s pretty typical for New Year’s Resolutions to fall off before February even begins.
But if one of your goals is to
save money
this year, don’t give up just yet—even if you’ve had trouble getting this resolution started.
With a little help from our friends at
TurboTax®
, here are six easy tips to help you get started with saving money today! Try these out to set yourself up for money-saving success this year.

Track your spending

This one is almost a no-brainer, but don’t wait. Start tracking your spending today, and see how it looks by the end of the month. You might be spending more than you think you are, and tracking every expense can really help put things in perspective.
Once you start tracking your spending, identify any
areas where you can save
—even expenses that might seem insignificant, like your daily morning coffee run, can really add up over time.
In addition to making your coffee at home more often during the week, you might find other similar ways to save—like bringing your lunch to work and doing takeout less often.

Do curbside pickup for your groceries

Curbside pickup opportunities really expanded during the pandemic, so consider using this to your advantage.
Some grocery stores have an app where you can easily order the groceries online, then pick them up later. This can save you money because you’re more likely to stick to your list, and can avoid any last-minute temptations, like the chocolate chip cookies you see when you pass by the bakery section that weren’t on your list.
While there might be a small fee for this service, you might find it still saves you money and time in the long run to do your shopping from the convenience of your home.

Utilize your local library

Not only does using your local library save you a ton of money on books, but there are actually many other services that many local libraries offer that you may not even know about. For example, some libraries offer game and equipment rentals—even car equipment!
You might be surprised at what you can rent if you only need it for a little while, so be sure to check your local library before making a gadget or game purchase.

Set up an automatic savings plan

An automatic savings plan will deposit a fixed amount of funds of your choosing to a savings account. You can usually choose how often you want the funds automatically deposited. You can sometimes set this up through online banking, but check with your bank for more information.
If the idea of automatically depositing money each month makes you nervous, you could also look at savings as another bill to pay each month, and include it in your budget. Make it due at the end of each month, then make a plan to “pay” a certain amount to your savings account by then.
