The 2022 Nissan Murano: How Does it Rate Among Similar SUVs?

Not too much has changed about the
all-new
2022 Nissan Murano, other than a slight price hike from last year and a blacked-out “Midnight Edition” color scheme. Still, its ratings are strong overall, with solid performance, smooth drive, and stylish looks.
The Murano is an oldie but a goodie, with a tried-and-true design and solid tech. So, what should you know about the mode’s current iteration, and which version should a careful car-buyer choose? Plus, how does it compare to other midsize SUVs on the market?

The 2022 Nissan Murano: What should you know?

This model has a 3.5-liter V6 engine that can generate 260 horsepower. It comes with the option of front-wheel or all-wheel drive and offers strong performance, especially on longer rides. A weak spot is its towing capability of only 1,500 pounds.
The 2022 Murano really shines when it comes to fuel economy, with an estimated miles per gallon (mpg) of 20 for city driving and 28 mpg for the highway. According to
Car and Driver
, these estimates, which are provided by the Environmental Protection Agency, come close to the real thing (they measured the Murano’s highway fuel economy slightly lower, at 27 mpg).
Another strength is the model’s interior, which comes with lush materials and comfortable padded seats. With teak-wood trim, and
real leather
on the armrests, door panels, and seats, the car’s interior is decidedly high quality. However, the Murano’s interior tends to be less spacious than that of its competitors.

The 2022 Nissan Murano: Which version should you buy?

Car and Driver advises car-buyers to opt for the Murano SV, which includes features such as power-adjustable front seats, remote start, and adaptive cruise control. This model is in the middle of the price range, at $37,625, since it comes with non-standard features. If you’re willing to tack $1,550 on to the price, you can upgrade to all-wheel drive.
The 2022 Nissan Murano starts at $34,085 and can get as expensive as $45,635. However, the more expensive models are likely not worth it, as the Murano is an older model without many bells and whistles.

How does it compare with similar SUVs?

According to Car and Driver, the 2022 Nissan Murano doesn’t live up to its rivals in the midsize SUV segment. In particular, Car and Driver celebrated the
2022 Honda Passport
and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe for their superior “value and practicality.”
However,
Consumer Reports (CR)
doesn’t agree that the 2022 Honda Passport and Hyundai Santa Fe are better than the all-new Murano. In fact, CR rates the Murano above either of these models, with a strong overall score of 81 out of 100. To compare, the Passport gets an overall score of 76 out of 100, while the Santa Fe gets only a 58.
CR has a lot of good things to say about the 2022 Nissan Murano, which scored a 77 out of 100 on its road test and earned solid reliability and owner satisfaction ratings (4 and 3 out of 5, respectively).
CR was less kind to the Passport and Santa Fe. Despite scoring well on its road test, the Passport flopped on predicted owner satisfaction, earning a rating of only 2 out of 5. The Santa Fe’s lower rating may be due in part to its poor reliability score—only 2 out of 5—and a recent recall in its 2022 lineup.
