How Orange County property taxes are determined

There are 21 taxing jurisdictions in Orange County, Texas, and some properties fall into more than one. These jurisdictions include Orange County, a port district, a water district, a drainage district, five school districts, eight cities, and four emergency services districts, according to the Orange County, TX website.
Each jurisdiction has its own budget and levies taxes accordingly. If your property is in overlapping jurisdictions, you’ll have to pay taxes for each one according to the jurisdiction’s tax rate and the value of your property.
Your property’s value is determined by a local tax assessor based on the property’s market value. When you receive your bill, if you think your property’s value has been calculated incorrectly, you can protest the assessment in writing. How to pay property taxes in Orange County 

Property tax bills are mailed in October in Orange County. You have until January 31st to postmark your payment. If January 31st falls on a weekend, a postmark on the next business day is considered on time.
If you don’t pay your property taxes on time, they will start accruing interest, so it’s best to pay them as soon as you can!
If you’re 65 or older and eligible for either the Disabled Person Exemption or the Disabled Veteran Exemption, you may pay property taxes in four equal installments over the year without a penalty or interest. If you qualify, you have to set up the installment plan before March 1st after receiving your bill.
Taxpayers in Orange County can pay property taxes in a few different ways. You can pay online, in person, by mail, or over the phone. To pay:
  • Online: You can make full or partial payments online using any combination of credit cards and/or e-checks. Credit card payments are charged a 2.5% fee, while e-checks cost a flat rate of $1.50. 
  • In person: You can pay by cash, check, money order, or debit card/credit card. There are two office locations: 123 South 6th Street in Orange, Texas, and 155 Wilson St in Vidor, Texas.
  • By mail: Checks should be made payable to Karen Fisher or the Orange County Tax Office and be mailed to: Karen Fisher Tax Assessor-Collector Orange County, PO Box 1568 Orange, TX 77631-1568. To get credit for your mailed-in payment, include a copy of your tax bill or your account number.
  • By phone: You can make full or partial payments through Orange County’s automated phone system by calling (866) 549-1010. You’ll need Bureau Code 1122333.
