How Lake County property taxes are determined

Property taxes are determined “ad valorem,” which translates to “according to worth.” The more valuable your property is, the more you can expect to pay in property taxes.
The Lake County Property Appraiser’s Office uses
millage rates
to calculate a fair assessment value for each property (often a percentage of the home’s market value).
Then, the county multiples your assessment value by your district’s tax rate to determine the dollar amount you have to pay.
If you believe your property was overvalued, you have the right to appeal the assessment. To do so, contact the
Lake County Tax Assessor's Office
