High gas prices
and environmental concerns are motivating more drivers to look into more
eco-friendly alternatives
to gas-powered cars. As sustainable cars grow in popularity, automakers are in an unspoken race to create the most eco-friendly technology possible.
This year’s
Bloomberg Green's Electric Car Ratings
as reported by
Inside EVs
broke down the current greenest cars on the market and gave them an overall green rating.
It's not surprising to see industry leader Tesla at the top of the list, but newcomer
Lucid
took the top spot with the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range.
Read on with the car ownership experts at Jerry to learn the methodology behind the rankings, why the Lucid Air came in first, and how to get a great deal on car insurance for an eco-friendly car.

How Bloomberg’s green rating works

For this year’s list, Bloomberg looked at a total of 34 electric vehicles. Each model is given a Green rating out of 100, and the rating is calculated based on a variety of factors.
Things that are taken into consideration when calculating the green rating include EPA range estimate, curb weight, economy, and battery size. The green rating for each car is a weighted score of its range divided by curb weight plus battery size, on a scale from 0 to 100.
The scoring system was developed based on advice from three of the leading sources for electric vehicle policy and strategy: Atlas Public Policy, BloombergNEF, and the Union of Concerned Scientists. The model does not account for the carbon cost of vehicle assembly.

Lucid air wins Bloomberg’s green rating, Tesla fills out the top 10

The
Lucid Air Dream Edition Range
scoured a 71.1 overall green rating, making it the highest scorer on the list.
It is followed by the
Tesla Model 3
Long Range in second place and Tesla Model S in third, but all of Tesla’s vehicles actually made it into the top 10, with the Y taking 5th place and the X taking 10th.
In spite of having one of the biggest batteries in the ranking, the Lucid Air won due to its 520-mile EPA range rating. The Lucid Air also earned the highest charging speed on the list at 22 miles per minute.
Other contenders that made it into the top 10 include the Chevrolet Bolt EV in 4th and the EUV in 7th, the Hyundai Kona Electric in 6th, the Kia Niro EV in 8th, and the Kia EV6 in 9th.

Is the Lucid Air a good buy?

While the Lucid Air Dream Edition has the longest EPA range rating by a landslide, it comes at a pretty heft price tag. The starting price for the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range is $169,000
If you’re looking for a more economical buy, the Tesla Model 3 Long Range has a starting price of $55,990—that’s a great deal considering it scored just a few points below the Lucid Air with a green rating of 66.7.
