As Volvo
marches ahead with its goal of selling only EVs by 2030, the public is beginning to see what the Swedish car company's zero emissions future will have in store. Safety still plays a pivotal factor in all of their models, but they’re certainly gaining more style points than they had through the 80s and 90s with their boxy, utilitarian-looking vehicles.
In fact, style seems to be one of its biggest focuses in making both the XC40 Recharge and the C40 Recharge.
Both of these cars are nearly identical in terms of what they offer beneath the chassis (The C40 eeks out 3 more miles per full charge for a total of 226 due to being lighter), but the look and a few interior elements separate the XC40 compact SUV from the C40 crossover, as well as the price.
The C40 Recharge design
Volvo
fans have been familiar with the XC40 for a while now as it was made as a gas-powered compact SUV for several years before the EV, Recharge, version hit the scene. The C40 Recharge; however, is a totally new and exclusively EV model of Volvo. The C40 Recharge, which is considered an SUV crossover, with a slopped, “coupe-like” roofline giving it a more aero and sporty look than the squared-off XC40. It also has an air deflector on the roof and a small spoiler on the back.
The rear light layout is different as well with sequined LED taillights going up the liftgate to the roof. The C40 also exclusively offers topographic dash and door panels that glow at night and change colors depending on how the sun hits them.
Overall, the C40 Recharge is sporty and cool looking. Unfortunately, some of its design features come at a cost to interior comfort and storage; namely, less headroom in the backseat and fewer cubic feet for storage.
The XC40 Recharge design
If the C40 Recharge is something of the funky but sometimes irresponsible younger brother, the XC40 Recharge is the older, more put-together sibling. Sure, it’s a little square (literally and figuratively) but it’s more practical.
With a more traditional compact SUV shape, the XC40 Recharge offers 2-inches more height in the back as well as 57.5 cubic ft of storage in the back, compared to the 48.7 cubic ft of the C40. The XC40 has a panoramic sunroof compared to a fixed glass roof on the C40.
The price
The pricing of these two models is an interesting conversation in values. As stated above, you’re getting more headroom, a longer vehicle, and more storage in the XC40 Recharge, yet it comes in at an estimated $53,550 while the C40 demands $55,300. Sometimes bells and whistles cost more than raw material.
