What Do Rivian Owners Have to Say After a Month of Ownership?

Rivian’s stock price might make you avert your eyes, but its actual product, the R1T is something to behold. After a month of ownership, does it live up to the hype?

Rivian hasn’t had the easiest month or so. Since the EV startup’s rockstar
initial public offering
in December, its value has been on a steady decline, and lowered output projections haven’t helped its case to investors.
But the new company has one thing over other young automakers—actual
electric vehicles
in the hands of buyers. Deliveries of the Rivian R1T and R1S began in September and have slowly but surely reached American garages over the last six months.
That feat begs the question: what’s it been like to receive a Rivian, and what’s it like to own one?
Jerry
, your car ownership
super app
, went scouring through the internet to find out.

Rivan markup isn’t curbing demand

The path to receiving a Rivian wasn’t without its controversy. In the midst of the
first deliveries
, many people on the pre-order list were told that the cost of their new EV would cost up to $20,000 more than anticipated.
Rivian quickly backtracked the decision, but the damage to their customers’ trust was not as easy to retract. Drivers waiting for their new vehicles were left feeling uneasy.
Once their Rivians reached their driveways, however, suspicions quickly dissipated. In fact, since the positive reviews started racking up, demand for the
R1T
has skyrocketed.
YouTube’s
Ellie in Space
spoke to Rivian owner Eugene Kim, who said that the electric pickup truck is selling on the used market for up to $150,000—twice its original starting price.

Once you’re behind the wheel, a Rivian doesn’t disappoint

Eugene Kim paid for his pre-order in May 2019. He didn’t receive his R1T until March 18. That’s a long time to wait, but Kim says it was all worth it.
It’s his first EV, and so that’s the main highlight for him. But the pickup’s impressive list of driving modes, its creative physical features like secret cubbies and complimentary bluetooth speaker, and its
go-anywhere range
are also big pluses.
Owning the R1T hasn’t been all smooth sailing. Within his first month of owning the truck, he already needed to bring it in for servicing because a suspension error popped up, and he wishes the company would’ve included Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
But the thing about Rivian, like many EV makers, is that its vehicles are constantly evolving. Software updates have already improved
charging
times and other features, and Kim expects those upgrades to continue.

How to save on Rivian ownership costs

Rivian’s base prices sit comfortably in the luxury range. At its most affordable, an R1T goes for just under $80,000.
Car insurance
rates, which are higher on average for electric vehicles, don’t help the situation.
