While this might sound like science fiction, the truth is that it’s far from fictitious. The issue lies primarily in utilizing a receiver of sorts within an EV in order to charge the car wirelessly, without losing too much power in the process.
The benefits of wireless charging are that EV owners won’t need to purchase cables, or worry about the elements interfering with the charging process. In addition, drivers will also be able to avoid having to park near an outlet or charging station, as long as their wireless charging location is easy to access. Imagine being able to park your EV, grab the groceries, and rest easy, knowing that your car is sitting in the driveway, charging wirelessly overnight.
What hardware is required for wireless charging?
The two most important pieces of hardware that a wireless charging setup requires—for home use, at least—is a receiver and a transmitter pad.
The receiver would be connected to an outlet that would supply power, ranging from 110 volts to 240 volts all the way up to 480 volts. The transmitter pad would allow the vehicle to absorb the electricity being emitted from the receiver. The pad would need to be installed in a parking lot, garage driveway, or possibly at an EV charging station if wireless charging ever goes public.
Will wireless charging be faster than traditional EV chargers?
Wireless charging won’t necessarily be faster than traditional EV charging, at least until technology improves, but EV owners won’t have to replace cables, or worry about needing compatible charging stations if wireless charging becomes universal.
However, as pointed out by Green Car Reports, wireless charging is likely going to be a highly expensive option once automakers mass-produce this technology. Having a car that’s wireless charging-compatible will probably cost thousands of dollars.
