background
The electric truck wars are hot. Sizzling, even. Now that
Ford
and
Chevrolet
have announced their entries,
Toyota
is hot on their heels with the soon-to-be-produced Toyota Tacoma EV.
The buzz around electric trucks is deafening. Once thought of as vehicles that had no place in the EV space, trucks are now becoming the en vogue electric option. With the
Ford F-150 Lightning
hitting driveways and the Chevrolet Silverado EV not far behind, Toyota would be well-served to share more details about its
Tacoma
EV.

Does Toyota have an electric truck?

The short answer: Toyota doesn’t have an electric truck yet—at least, not officially.
Ford has already released its electrified version of the popular F-150 truck, and Chevrolet is taking orders for its electrified Silverado. And you can’t talk about EVs without mentioning the electric truck from
Tesla
that has close to 1 million reservations.
Toyota hasn’t gotten into specifics, only releasing general statements about its $17 billion investment in producing 30 electric vehicles by 2030.
But electric is the way of the future, and Toyota knows it. That’s why the company has
shown off concept sketches
of some of its upcoming vehicles, including the Toyota Tacoma EV that is expected to be coming soon.

What we know about the Toyota Tacoma EV so far

Toyota hasn’t released a lot of details about the upcoming battery-electric truck, but there are some reasonable assumptions to be made, like:
  • 200+ mile driving range
  • Towing capacity equal to or greater than gas-powered namesake
  • Powertrain-specific cues aimed at improving aerodynamics
For reference, the F-150 Lightning will have an expected range of 320 miles, while the Silverado EV will offer up to 400 miles of range on a full charge. For Toyota to compete, it may have to upgrade its technology to meet customer expectations.
Apart from mileage estimates, we can be reasonably assured that the truck will share interior and exterior characteristics with the next-gen Toyota Tacoma. Most experts believe it will come exclusively in crew cab, four-door form.

Toyota’s electric future

Toyota
recently did an about-face
in terms of its electrified future. After saying the hype around electric vehicles was overblown, the company has recently committed to investing $17 billion in battery technology to help reduce tailpipe emissions while building more EVs.
The company aims to sell 3.5 million battery EVs globally by 2030 and plans to turn Lexus into an EV-only brand by 2035.
For a company that was not all-in on EVs just a few years ago, it has since clearly embraced the idea of electric vehicles and will give consumers a lot to choose from in the very near future.

The future of car insurance shopping

One downside of buying an electric vehicle is that they tend to have
higher insurance costs
. This is because the parts and repairs are expensive, not to mention the value of the vehicle is usually higher.
That’s why you shouldn’t take an older approach to car insurance shopping if you want to buy the most cutting-edge vehicles on the market. You could spend the day researching insurance quotes, but who wants to do that?
