As someone who can’t afford both a car and a boat, it does sound like an appealing two-for. All-aboard!
Elon said what about the Cybertruck!?
He got more specific by saying that he wanted the truck to be able to cross the channel from Space X’s Starbase to South Padre Island in South Texas.
For reference, that’s a roughly 1,100 ft crossing. Is traffic bad on the causeway to South Padre? Slow propulsion will come from the wheels so just drive on in, the water’s nice!
Not Tesla’s first wade in the water
After a video surfaced of a Tesla Model S driving/swimming through a flooded tunnel, Musk said that it was always his intention for the Model S to be waterproof and able to act as a small boating craft. At the same time; however, he said it wasn’t recommended.
In 2020 he made a similar remark about people being able to turn their Cybertruck into an amphibious vehicle.
There’s even been a third-party company, Cybercat Catamaran, that wants to sell a wild-looking conversion kit that will transform your Cybertruck into a catamaran. Although, if the whole thing can function as a boat, it’s likely a redundant accessory.
The future will soon be here with the Cybertruck
There’s no word on whether the base model will be able to drive you across a small body of water or if you’ll need an AWD build.
The two motor, AWD model will start at an estimated $50,000 and the three-motor model will begin at an estimated $70,000 with an impressive range of 500 miles per full charge.
