Tesla
, a global leader in both electric cars and
self-driving technology
, is experiencing an executive shakeup per a recent announcement. One of the primary leaders of Tesla’s AI and Autopilot department, Andrej Karpathy, announced that he has left the company.
CNBC
reported that Karpathy, who has been with the company for the past five years, made the official announcement via Twitter.
Read along with car-ownership super app Jerry to learn everything you need to know about Karpathy’s work with the company, Tesla’s advancements in AI, and what this means for the future of the company.
Tesla’s path to fully-autonomous driving
Karpathy spent 5 years at Tesla, and in that time the company made big progress in self-driving technology.
While the company has yet to deliver its promised fully-autonomous technology, it offers driver assistance features like traffic-aware cruise control, automated navigation and lane-keeping assistance.
Considering Tesla’s vast progress in the AI and automatic driving segment, Karpathy’s departure from the company is shocking.
“It’s been a great pleasure to help Tesla towards its goals over the last 5 years and a difficult decision to part ways,” said Karpathy on Twitter, although no specific reason was given for his resignation.
CEO Elon Musk even thanked Karpathy for his work in response.

The highs and lows of Tesla’s autopilot technology

While Tesla’s autopilot tech is some of the most advanced in the industry, it has also been on the receiving end of vocal criticism.
There have been some alarming data produced surrounding driver-assisted crashes, but it has been proven to be misleading and doesn’t tell the full story.
Tesla even recently revealed a
new feature
to its self-driving technology that is able to detect lights from an emergency vehicle when using Autosteer at night on a high-speed road, a fix that will hopefully vastly reduce the risk of crashes.
At this point, even
Tesla’s most advanced self-driving package
still requires a human touch. Drivers must keep hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times, even while the Full Self-Driving Beta system is running.
