This Tesla Got Second Place Best as the Best Selling Car in the U.K. Last Month

The Tesla Model Y is quickly becoming one of the top-selling cars in the UK. Is it just a trend or here to stay?

Elon Musk once said that he believed the
Tesla
Model Y could be the greatest-selling car, electric or otherwise. It was a
bold statement regarding Tesla
from a guy who lives for bold headlines. But he may also be onto something.
Last month, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Ltd (SMMT), reported that the Tesla crossover was number 2 on the list of most sold vehicles for the month.
It’s an astonishing accomplishment given that the
Model Y
is squarely in the premium vehicle category. But hey, when you add up the various incentives and subtract your yearly budget for gas (or petrol, as the Brits say!), premium somehow becomes more affordable.

A premium disruptor and trend setter

Is it a one-month blip or the start of a new trend, only time can tell, but the Model Y not only came in 2nd place for the month, but it was also miles ahead of the competition behind it.
The Model Y sold 8,315 while the only car to edge it out was the Nissan Qashai at 9,311. It was nearly 2,000 units ahead of the number 3 spot, the
Volkswagen Polo
Now when you pull back and look at the year to date, it isn’t as dominant, but who knows what the final three months of the year have to bring. Up to September, the Model Y sits at 8th place, but it’s the only premium car on the list.
“September has seen Britain’s millionth electric car reach the road – an important milestone in the shift to zero-emission mobility. Battery electric vehicles makeup but a small fraction of cars on the road, so we need to ensure every lever is pulled to encourage motorists to make the shift if our green goals are to be met,” the SMMT executive, Mike Hawes, said.

Pulling back and pushing ahead

When you look at the total market share of a company like Tesla, it’s still relatively small to talk such a big game; however, when you consider the yearly change, it’s quickly seen as impressive. For instance, in the UK in 2021, Tesla made up 1.68% of the total market.
Jump ahead a year and they’ve almost doubled it with 2.67. Put that compared to say, Audi, who dropped from 7.30% to 6.62% and you can see where the premium buyers are going.
Tesla recently opened a huge
Gigafactory in Berlin
that is expected to churn out 500,000 units a year. While the UK is no longer part of the EU, they are still the main trading partner and it’s expected that many of those Teslas will find their way to the island.
