One of the biggest drawbacks to electric vehicles (EVs) is the price tag. While EVs offer great benefits, like impressive fuel economy and lower maintenance costs, there’s no denying that sticker shock is real when it comes to electric-powered vehicles.
The company behind the reasonably priced and ultra accessible electric vehicle might not be a car brand you’re familiar with if you live in the United States.
Tata Motors is an India-based company that leads the country in electric vehicle production and sales. India’s government wants to increase electric vehicles on the roads from 1% to 30% by 2030, so Tata Motors’ efforts are helped with government subsidies.
What is Tata Motors’ latest electric vehicle?
To keep ahead of the competition and grow electric vehicle share throughout India, Tata Motors unveiled the Tiago electric vehicle, priced at 849,000 rupees, or $10,370.
Despite the small battery pack, the car functions well and gets a respectable 155 miles of range. Plus, Tata Motors offers DC fast charging throughout India. While the exact rate of charge isn’t specified, the company does say that DC fast charging can add 110 km of range with 30 minutes of charging.
Managing Director of Tata Motors Shailesh Chandra said the car’s disruptive pricing would open new opportunities and markets for the brand in smaller cities and towns where the population was more price-conscious.
Tata Motors helps advance India’s automotive world
The Tiago electric vehicle isn’t the first small and affordable car Tata Motors has produced for India. The Tiago is Tata Motors’ third electric vehicle, and the car brand has gas-powered vehicles, too. Tata Motors is the third largest carmaker in India, and its electric vehicle unit is valued at $1.9 billion.
