On the Q4 sales call of 2021, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe reported that the company was planning to develop a new 800-volt EV platform with bidirectional charging and LFP batteries.
While there hasn’t been much more officially released, many have been trying to connect dots and speculate about what Rivian might be planning to release.
Rivian will be giving us some new cars
The new platform will be called R2 and is slated to be more affordable, with more compact vehicles than current Rivian offerings.
Rivian intends to scale up production to 150,000 vehicles per year over the next few years. They currently have 90,000 preordered R1T trucks and R1S SUVs, as well as 100,000 Amazon delivery vehicles waiting to be manufactured and delivered. The supply chain problems and delivery timetable headaches right now are making this more difficult than Rivian would like, but they are still charging onwards with their plans for growth.
What exactly will these new cars be?
MotorTrend states that “the R2 platform will take on a more compact size and design for a series of smaller vehicles, including both trucks and SUVs. We expect the R2 lineup will have dual- and tri-motor drivetrain configurations, but will not adopt the quad-motor setup of the larger, beefier R1 platform that underpins the R1T and R1S.”
We still don’t know exactly when this new R2 line will launch. We do know one thing for sure, though: we are looking forward to hearing and seeing more from this successful automaker!
