It’s Official: The Jeep Wrangler Is Getting a Zero-Emission ‘Brother'

Jeep announced four new zero-emission vehicles to be added to its lineup, one of which has been dubbed a “brother” to the Wrangler, rather than a replacement.

Jeep
is finally coming out with an electric version of the beloved Wrangler SUV—sort of.
Rival brands like Ford have introduced the BEV version of best-selling cars under a familiar nameplate, like the
F-150 Lightning
or the Mustang Mach-E, but Jeep has designated the new zero-emission Recon as a “brother” to the Wrangler.
The Recon is one of four electric SUVs that Jeep has planned, with the first Recon rolling out for 2024. But some critics may wonder, why wouldn’t Jeep want to brand the EV under the familiar Wrangler nameplate?

Jeep’s new lineup of zero-emission vehicles

Stellantis, Jeep’s parent company, has been a bit slower to adopt electric vehicles but has promised to make at least half of Jeep’s portfolio hybrid or fully electric by 2025, and increase all-electric Jeeps to 50% of U.S. sales by 2030.
According to
Bloomberg
, Jeep is planning a few other zero-emissions vehicles to be added to its fleet in addition to the Recon. This lineup will include the Jeep Avenger, the Wagoneer Sand a fourth new EV that Stellantis has yet to release details about.
The Avenger is a compact electric SUV designed to navigate urban spaces. The Avenger is planned to debut in the European market next year. Jeep revived the luxury three-row Wagoneer in 2020, and in 2024, they’re releasing an all-electric version.

Why Jeep isn’t making it a Wrangler

Ford isn’t the only brand to capitalize on a beloved nameplate to release a new electric vehicle. General Motors started delivering the first
Hummer EVs
last year, and many other automakers have extended certain models to include hybrid and electric options.
Still, Jeep is being careful not to deviate too much from the popular Wrangler’s formula. For this reason, the brand is presenting the Recon as an alternative to, rather than a replacement for the Wrangler.
“The Wrangler stays the Wrangler, the icon of the brand, that’s very clear,” said Christian Meunier, the global head of Jeep, as reported by Bloomberg
It is somewhat of a surprising choice, as a
plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler
already exists, but launching the Recon as a new venture could help establish an all-new legacy for the brand.
All eyes have been on Jeep since the brand made a bold decision to end a partnership in the world’s largest automotive market, shuttering its only Chinese plant after a failure to reach an agreement with former partner company GAC Group.
Perhaps Jeep is playing it safe with EV rollouts in European and North American markets, so as not to alienate any more of its customer base.
