The Biden administration is advocating green driving and a national network of EV charging stations pledging a whopping $175 million to the cause. New York is one of the states set to benefit from the funding.
In the recent past, the state administration has been offering incentives for car owners to buy more
electric vehicles
as it pushes for more clean energy.

New stations bring good news to New York EVs

WSHU
states that New York state is eligible for $26 million in funding in the first phase of the bipartisan infrastructure funding that Congress recently passed.
Part of the funds would be used to upgrade the infrastructural network and build more charging stations. This will go a long way towards making it easy for EV owners to charge on the go.
Currently, the state has about 2,900 ports. It intends to increase the number of these stations across all areas but is still undecided about the exact locations where the stations will be installed.
Suffolk and Nassau counties are leading in the number of EV vehicles in the state, with
popular brands
competing for the market, with the former having 14,856 cars and the latter with about 12,589 units.
Governor Kathy Hochul said that the state intends to add 4,745 new ports on Long Island by 2025, which will make it one of the best places to charge.

New York EVs will charge conveniently along major roads

According to the
New York Post
, part of the regulations for federal infrastructural funding is to install charging stations along major roadways as a part of the network called Alternative Fuel Corridors. In these corridors, there will be an EV charging station every 50 miles.
State officials are required to present plans for the money to the U.S. Transportation Department by August 1. Following approval, the state will fund 20% of total infrastructure costs. In addition, states can partner with private firms to build and manage the ports.
However, the private companies will be required to meet specific requirements to ensure that the stations can charge popular New York EVs. 40% of the charging documents will go to disadvantaged populations and marginalized areas. However, the requirements are highly flexible.
Currently, electric cars make up less than 3% of cars on New York roads. Hybrid vehicles account for approximately 1.4% of all vehicles, with the remainder powered by internal combustion engines.
However, the EV numbers will likely go up fast with better access to charging stations and other incentives.

What incentives do New York EV owners get?

The
U.S. Department of Energy
states that New York has various incentives to maintain electric cars. The state's Alternative Fuel Vehicle Research and Development Funding has a Clean Transportation Program that finances any project that enhances the use of alternative fuels on the roads. New York EVs are also exempted from the state's emissions inspections.
Besides, alternative-fuel trucks and buses also get a discount on the cost of purchase depending on their class. Better charging networks will add to these incentives.
