It’s no secret that carmakers have been longing to increase the battery range on
electric vehicles, and that each year produces better and better batteries. In the past, the threshold has been somewhere in the 500-mile—until now.
A Chinese company is showcasing a specialized EV battery with a remarkable 600-plus mile range. So how soon will we start seeing this battery, or one like it, in EVs back in the States?
And if you’re switching to an EV, or even thinking about it, scout ahead for what your insurance premiums could look like with the Jerry app. Affordable

What’s the scoop on this boosted battery?
Business Insiderbrings to light, the company behind this powerful new battery is CATL. Though you may not have heard of them, they’re actually the largest battery manufacturer in the world. They’re based in China and are gearing up to start producing this new battery, the Qilin—set to deliver a whopping 620 miles of range.
Will the Qilin EV battery be available in the U.S.?
So far, it’s uncertain whether U.S. car manufacturers will be able to get their hands on the Qilin EV battery. Currently, China has a large monopoly on many of the world’s raw materials needed for producing EV batteries, so if U.S. companies do get the Qilin packs, it will be expensive.
This translates into higher pricing for U.S. drivers, whether they’re shopping online or at a dealership. The good news is that
the Biden Administrationis planning on expanding the U.S. supply chain, finding non-Chinese sourced cobalt, graphite, and lithium.
What EVs currently can match the Qilin EV battery’s range?
At present, the
Lucid Airis still the reigning champ in terms of battery range, boasting 520 miles of battery life. This title may not stick with the Lucid Air for long, considering that BMW has a new Gemini battery that might offer 600 miles of range, depending on what we see in the new BMW iX. Following the Lucid Air is the
Tesla Model S, with an EV battery range of around 405 miles.
EV battery range is highly dependent on speed, temperature, and the care that the car’s owner has put into maintaining the EV’s electrical system. Using fast-charging ports too often can quickly age a battery and ruin its charge capacity.
