While sister company Chevrolet was a pioneer in the EV market with their Volt model, Cadillac was slow to get into the EV game. That was until they started teasing a truly beautiful EV model of their own.
Features of the Cadillac Celestiq
The Celestiq was first teased at the CES trade show in 2021. It was a bona fide show stopper, getting the attention of both gearheads and technophiles. The Celestiq is decked out in state-of-the-art technology, but it has one feature, in particular, that was thought to only exist in science fiction.
We are talking about Celestiq's glass roof, which is made from SPD-SmartGlass Nanotechnology. To put it briefly, this isn't your momma's sunroof. Instead of just being a boring piece of transparent glass, Celestiq's roof can actually change its transparency on command.
But that's not all. The roof is divided into four different quadrants, so each passenger can control their own section of the glass roof. When the opacity is fully blocked, the roof will mimic the interior of the car as if it wasn't even there.
The roof is a cool new gadget, but it also has a practical purpose. According to
, the roof will improve Celestiq's battery range. A glass roof can reduce the cabin's temperature by about 18 degrees Fahrenheit, reducing the need for air conditioning.
It's hard to compare the Celestiq to other Cadillac EVs. For one, the Celestiq isn't even on the market yet. Secondly, Cadillac only has one EV in their current lineup: the Lyriq EV.
The Lyriq is a crossover SUV meant to compete with the Tesla Model Y, while the Celestiq will be a larger luxury sedan. The Lyriq was wildly popular when it debuted this past September. Pre-orders sold out in about 10 minutes.
The price of the Lyriq wasn't too bad either, starting at just under $60,000. The cost of the Celestiq will be substantially more.

MORE:
While Cadillac hasn't officially released the price of the Celestiq, most industry insiders expect it to be around $200,000. While the glass roof is cool, we don't know if it's $200,000 cool.
For what it's worth, the Celestiq does have some other nifty gadgets. It will be installed with Ultra Cruise, GM's most sophisticated hands-free driving system. According to TopElectricSUV, Ultra Cruise can handle 95% of all driving scenarios in the U.S. and Canada.
If everything goes to plan, the Celestiq will be available for pre-orders this upcoming June, with deliveries beginning in 2023. But if the chip shortage has taught us anything, buyers should have some flexibility with their expectations.
