background
Mini announced its first EV in 2019: the electric Mini SE, which turned out to be an affordable, adorable electric Mini Cooper. Its 110-mile range, however, has been a bit of a deterrent for Mini fans wanting to go electric. However, the automaker has now announced a
new EV concept car
, the Aceman. Will this release help Mini pick up its pace and fully join the ranks of the EV-making big boys?

What is the Mini Aceman?

The Concept Aceman is a Cooper-looking Mini EV that mixes the Mini aesthetic with a new greener outlook, and a fun, futuristic vibe with a dollop of British style.
This new look by Mini is known as Charismatic Simplicity. It is minimalistic but filled with innovative technology. The four-door Aceman is labeled as a crossover but looks like a Mini Cooper in shape. It’s bigger than the Cooper, but smaller than the sub-compact Mini Countryman SUV.
To keep the Aceman more environmentally sustainable, Mini has eliminated all leather and most of the chrome, since the process of creating chrome generates more emissions than other materials. The seats are a soft, cushy velvet velour, as is the steering wheel.

A British arcade on wheels

According to
Motor Authority
, the distinctive design of the Aceman features multiple glimpses of the British Union Jack flag. The front “grille” area has a design featuring the car's name, but underneath, Union Jack glows with pixelated light. This LED matrix features changing light patterns, and brightens as the viewer gets closer to the vehicle. It can also wink at passersby.
The taillights light up with half of the Union Jack, and the roof rack is shaped with similar flag-like features, making this little Mini as British as they come, but with a distinct arcade-like feel.

Styling details of the Mini Aceman

The Aceman is drenched in a light green paint color called Icy Sunglow Green, with British Racing Green accents on the roof and dark green cladding. The car also has green tinted headlights and running lights, as well as 20-inch wheels, but it is unclear whether these details will be offered on the final car when it is released. In another high-tech twist, speakers on the bumpers emit safety warnings to pedestrians.
The Aceman features a panoramic roof and a minimalistic, open cockpit. Instead of a traditional dashboard, the dash area of the Aceman features what looks like a sound bar, covered in a cartoon-like printed textile, and has just one circular digital display mounted directly in the center. This single display contains all infotainment and gauges.
Don’t worry, the well-known iconic Mini toggle switches and knobs for the audio, gears, and parking brake are still there, right below the digital display. One of the switches allows the driver to select which Mini Experience Mode they prefer. The modes have different sounds, colors, and infotainment options.
Car and Driver
likens many of these details to a feeling reminiscent of Nintendo’s Super Mario Bros.
There are myriad fun and artistic details on this new EV, but the one thing Mini hasn’t released is the size of the battery and the anticipated range. Mini lovers are hoping for a significant improvement in these areas as a way for Mini to find its way into the EV market.
Mini has announced that they will stop producing gas-powered cars in the early 2030s, so they have their work cut out for them! In a fitting move, Mini will be unveiling this new concept car at a video gaming conference from August 23-28 in Cologne, Germany.
