Everyone from
to a little startup you’ve never heard of is choosing the EV life. Promises to electrify fleets and shore up charging options are rampant in the auto world, and the ripple effects of this change are being felt across all industries.
Battery makers
, for example, are now in an arms race, vying for the attention of the Lucids and the Rivians of the world.

A profile of Cuberg

Cuberg was founded in 2015 at Stanford University. Co-founders Richard Wang and Mauro Pasta wanted to look beyond the current limitations of lithium ion batteries, which power most EVs, and build an energy-dense lithium metal battery, says
Tech Startups
.This longer-lasting and stronger lithium metal battery could make a major difference in the future of transportation, they argue.
And the difference wouldn’t just be in achievable range or charge times—Cuberg hopes to build a battery that will result in cheaper outcomes for EV customers, according to Tech Startups. Though the price of lithium ion batteries has been steadily decreasing, EVs themselves have not remained in step.
This startup’s push for a battery with more energy bang for its buck is a contribution, in theory, to a more affordable EV world.

How Cuberg wants to stand out

Lots of battery companies are churning out innovation in response to the EV craze, so what sets Cuberg apart?
This firm is already looking past the most obvious application for their technology—cars—and toward the sky.
says that its battery’s “excess of 350 Wh/kg of specific energy represent[s] a critical threshold for the electric aviation market.”
In other words, the firm claims that it has cracked the e-plane code. In fact, its original intention was to start with planes, making electromobility a new buzzword in aviation.
Its airborne ambitions are thrilling, but the clamoring automotive world won’t be ignored. Swedish EV battery company Northvolt, which has connections to auto giants like Volkswagen and BMW, acquired Cuberg in March of 2021. So perhaps we’ll be seeing Cuberg-branded lithium metal batteries in the next round of the i4.
