The 2022 MX-30 is the pilot vehicle for Mazda’s introduction into the electric vehicle industry. Its affordable starting price of $34,695 is intended to welcome a whole new class of first-time EV buyers.
But it’s not quite ready for the mass market yet. Mazda only produced and sold 560 units of the California-exclusive MX-30 EV in 2022. The automaker is still refining how much efficiency they can squeeze out without driving up the costs.
So while we wait, let’s take a look at the progress Mazda has made thus far. Follow along as

2022 Mazda MX 30 EV pricing information

Pricing for the 2022 Mazda MX-30 EV begins at $34,695. The Premium Plus model is also available with an assortment of additional driver-assist features (+ more) that will bump the price to $37,655.
This sticker price is undoubtedly head-turning considering immediate competitors like the Volkswagen ID.4 and Hyundai Ioniq 5 register starting prices over $40,000. So it makes you wonder, what’s the catch? Let’s dig a little deeper.

What is the cheapest Mazda MX 30 EV?

The base model for the Mazda MX-30 starts at $34,695. But once Mazda’s first EV hits the mass market, it should qualify for an
electric car tax credit
.
These incentives are typically worth up to $7,500. So if the MX-30 were to receive a maximum allocation, the price could fall as low as $27,195.
This brings the Mazda MX-30 on par with the uber-affordable Chevy Bolt, which has a starting price of $25,600. And since Chevy (General Motors) already has an established electric vehicle division, they are no longer eligible for the tax credit.

Is a Mazda MX 30 EV worth it?

Earlier we asked, what’s the catch? Well, except for its sleek exterior design and unique reverse-hinged rear doors, the price point seems to be the only advantage the MX-30 has over the competition.
Its performance and efficiency metrics are laughable for the modern standard set by the electric vehicle industry. So let’s take a look at some key improvement points that Mazda should focus on as they transition the MX-30 from a pilot program to the mass market.

What is the horsepower of a Mazda MX 30 EV?

Powered by a single electric motor, the Mazda MX-30 is only capable of producing 143 horsepower. It’s also only available in front-wheel-drive
This is just a recipe for poor acceleration. In fact, it takes the MX-30 almost nine seconds to reach 60 mph. The Tesla Model 3 could virtually perform this feat three times over before the MX-30 does once.
But not all hope is lost! The MX-30 does share the same name prefix with Mazda’s MX-5 Miata sports car. This is a hat tip to the MX-30’s keen handling and sharp steering. So the building blocks are there, Mazda just needs to beef up the power!

What is the range of the Mazda MX 30 EV?

Well, prepared to be disappointed again. The tiny 30.0-kWh battery pack is only good for about 100 miles of all-electric range before it runs out of juice.
Considering most budget-friendly EVs average around 250 miles per charge, this is highly underwhelming — even the attractive sticker price doesn’t justify it.
Mazda will need to head back to the lab to recalculate their price-to-performance equation if they want the MX-30 to be competitive in the electric vehicle industry.

Is the Mazda MX 30 EV reliable?

Since the Mazda MX-30 is still in its pilot phase, it’s a little early to cast judgment on its reliability. But here are two general thoughts to keep in mind:
  • Mazda SUVs have average reliability. For instance, the 2021 Mazda CX-30 ranked #6 out of small SUVs in J.D. Power’s annual quality and dependability ranking (score: 75/100).
  • Electric vehicles tend to be more reliable than gas-powered vehicles. The reason is quite simple: fewer components mean less opportunity for things to go wrong. However, the cost of repairs is often steeper, offsetting the benefits of that easy-going nature.
