Kia Turned up the Style With Its Latest Electric SUV
Kia is kicking it into overdrive for 2022 with the release of its new EV6. With several configurations available, the carmarker is obviously taking the electric vehicle market seriously.
. Or rather, seen on the test track. The much-anticipated EV6 GT can move from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, a surprising feat considering the company’s history is not rooted in speed.
Although the Kia Niro was the first electric vehicle the carmaker produced, it was built on the shared underpinnings of its gasoline-powered models. The Kia EV6 is the first model built on a completely new foundation known as their Electric-Global Modular Platform. This body makeover creates a spacious cabin with flat floors and extra storage room under the hood.
Low-slung lines paired with turbine-style rims definitely look sharp and seem to fit Kia’s description of the design as “digital tiger.” The 114.2-inch wheelbase emulates Kia’s Telluride SUV. Surround sound and 24 inches of modern curved screens hug the driver’s seat. Kia Connect is the newest infotainment system that seeks out EV charging stations and receives over-the-air updates. The vegan leather and recycled plastics interior is a big environmental hit.
Safety has not been overlooked either, with numerous driver assistance systems included. The safe exit assist feature, also available on other Kia models, alerts passengers of approaching traffic when attempting to exit the vehicle.
Other functions include pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assistance, driver attention monitor, blind spot and forward collision warning. Adaptive cruise control, lane centering and remote parking complete the impressive functionality of the Kia EV6.
Kia is sending a clear message to the automobile manufacturing industry: They are serious about EV and making this emerging segment a priority. The automaker, owned by Hyundai Motor Company, is committed to an ambitious goal of six more EVs by 2026 using their new platform.

. It’s available in rear-wheel and all-wheel drive with different motor and battery combinations. The long-range battery can travel 300 miles and reach a 70% recharge in just 18 minutes at public fast-charging stations. A notable feature is that it can double as an emergency power source.
Options start with a 58-kWh battery pack that has an estimated range of 200 miles. At the other end of the spectrum, the high performance EV6 GT has an output equivalent to 576 hp. Configurations vary between these two versions with a 77.4 kWh battery and dual motors also available.
The upcoming EV6 will round out Kia’s current lineup of crossovers and SUVs to eight different models. The Niro is already offered as fully electric and has a hybrid option, similar to the Sorento. Kia also sells five sedans. Whether any of the current models will be discontinued to make room for their bold moves on the EV front remains to be seen.
Those who buy the brand new Kia EV6 will want to take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax incentive. Base model pricing starts at $40,900 and climbs upwards of $55,900. The selling price for the EV6 GT has not been announced as of yet. And don’t forget to factor in a $1,215 destination fee, the non-negotiable cost of transporting your new vehicle from the manufacturer to your nearest dealership.
