Kia has been working on electrifying its lineup in recent years—but the Kia Soul EV has yet to hit American markets. For now, you’ll have to stick with the 2022 EV6 or the Niro EV.
The Kia Soul is one of the brand’s most iconic models. From its funky shape to its cavernous interior, the Soul’s image—helped along by the unforgettable hampster commercials—is near-legendary. Unfortunately, you’re out of luck if you were hoping to make your favorite boxy SUV more green with an electric version—unless you live in Canada.
The Kia Soul EV may not be an option for US drivers, but Kia’s got two superb all-electric options on the market—and more on the way. Here with all the details is

Kia Soul EV

Unfortunately, the 2022 Kia Soul EV isn’t available in the US—for now. Originally set to be released as the 2021 model, the Soul EV’s American release was canceled and postponed indefinitely. Canadian drivers can still enjoy the electric version of everyone’s favorite boxy SUV for a starting price of CAD 42,995.
If you’re on the hunt for a
Kia electric vehicle
, you aren’t out of luck! The automaker produces  two other fully-electric models available on the US market right now, along with five different hybrid options between three popular models. The brand also hopes to release 11 new all-electric cars by 2026.
Let’s take a look at Kia’s two current EVs.

2022 Kia EV6

With a 9/10 rating from Car and Driver and a smooth $42,695 starting price, the 2022 Kia EV6 is Kia’s brand new all-electric vehicle that looks like a subcompact SUV straight out of the future.
With smooth lines, lively handling, generous active safety features, and a spacious interior, the EV6 makes a strong first impression on the electric market.
Driving the EV6 feels futuristic, too. Set up with two battery choices—58.0-kWh or 77.4-kWh—and the option for a dual-motor powertrain, the EV6 is more than your average non-luxury EV. The all-wheel drive GT trim’s 576 horsepower motor and a zero-to-60 time of fewer than 3.5 seconds put the Kia EV6 in Tesla territory.
You could also stick with the rear-wheel drive base powertrain’s 167 horsepower to earn the EPA-rated 232-mile range, but the larger batteries get up to 310 miles on a single charge and earn 117 MPGe. Recharging your EV6 from 10 to 80 percent takes less than 18 minutes with a 350-kW fast charger. Even with a Level 2 charger, the EV6 can go from 10 to 100 percent in just seven hours
The interior isn’t too shabby either. Here’s what else you can expect from the 2022 EV6:
  • Over-the-air software updates
  • Voice command infotainment system
  • Digitized dashboard
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Wireless smartphone charging
  • Plentiful storage options
  • 28 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back seat; 54 cubes total

2022 Kia Niro EV

If you’re looking for something less conspicuous but still just as functional and, well, electric as the EV6, the
2022 Kia Niro EV
is a solid option for more low-key drivers. Starting at $40,385, the 2022 Niro EV is the fully-electric version of Kia’s popular hybrid and plug-in hybrid subcompact crossover. Before you get your hopes up, though, know that the Niro EV is only currently sold in select states.
The driving experience of the Niro EV is smooth and quiet. Powered by just one electric motor with 201 horsepower, the Niro EV gets an estimated 112 MPGe. Its estimated 239-mile range is thanks to its 64.0-kWh battery, which is pretty standard across the genre. While the 2022 Niro EV offers three different trims, the powertrain remains consistent between them.
You can fully charge your Niro EV’s battery with a Level 2 (240v) charger in around nine hours, but a DC fast-charger will boost your battery to 80 percent within a single hour.
As far as the interior goes, the 2022 Kia Niro EV hovers around average levels of refinement for this class. It’s stacked with plenty of standard equipment and comes with the option for even more. Here are some of the standout features:
  • Power and heated front seats
  • Optional ventilated front seats
  • Two-zone automatic climate control
  • Bluetooth
  • Apple CarPlay/Android Auto
  • Voice-activated navigation
  • Forward-collision warning
  • Automated emergency braking
  • Lane-departure warning/lane-keeping assist
  • Adaptive cruise control

Are Kia EVs reliable?

Since Kia’s EVs are new to the market, we’ll have to wait and see if these vehicles preserve Kia’s reputation for reliability. Here’s what we can take into account to predict this future:
  • Kia won J.D. Power’s award for the most reliable brand in 2016—and was the first non-luxury brand to do so since 1989. It also ranked highest overall in 2021 for mass market non-luxury brands.
  • Electric vehicles are often more reliable than gas-powered ones because they have fewer parts that are likely to wear out over time. That being said, EV repairs are often more expensive.
