At this year’s prestigious New York Auto Show,
Kia
revealed the 2023 Niro EV with new U.S. performance specs and resourceful styling.
With a futuristic and aggressive-looking Aero Blade design, is the Niro EV the next best electric car?

An impressive eco-friendly lineup

Get ready for an uptick in powertrain efficiency for the hybrid, hybrid plug-in, and EV. According to
Consumer Reports
, “As with the
original model
, the 2023 Kia Niro slots in between a wagon and a small SUV, and it will continue to offer buyers three efficient modes of transport.”
The Niro Hybrid is expected to have a driving range of a whopping 588 miles, and the EV with an expected range of 253 miles per charge (14 miles more than its predecessor).
According to
Electrek
, “Sustainability was also stressed by the Korean automaker when presenting details of the new Niro, which will feature headlining made from recycled wallpaper, seats made from bio-based polyurethane, and Tencel (textile) made from eucalyptus leaves.”
And to minimize environmental impact, Kia painted the door panels with water-based, BTX free paint.
The 2023 Niro offers a 1.6-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine with 139 hp or a 1.6-liter four-cylinder plug-in hybrid with 180 hp. The EV model runs on an electric motor with one-speed direct drive, cranking out 201 hp. Unfortunately, for those in snowy climates, all-wheel drive isn’t available.
With its new lineup, “Kia looks to have improved upon the Niro’s efficiency deficits with the new model—bringing improved fuel mileage for the hybrid, a longer electric range for the plug-in hybrid, and an increased driving range for the EV version—thanks to reduced weight and a more aerodynamic body,” Consumer Reports notes.
It seems Kia has left no stone unturned, in an effort to contribute to an eco-friendly future. According to Consumer Reports, “In addition to Sport and Eco drive modes, both Niro hybrids will have a new Green Zone Drive Mode that automatically switches the powertrain into EV drive mode when going through residential areas, and near schools and hospitals.”
Whether or not the South Korean automaker addressed previous shortcomings like bumpy shifts, uncomfortable front seats, and long braking distances will have to wait to be evaluated in Consumer Reports’ auto test program.

Exterior and interior changes

The exterior features striking boomerang headlights and grille-height headlamps. “Shaped like a boomerang, the LED treatment makes the Niro look like a wholly different vehicle than the one it replaces—at least when viewed from the rear,” Consumer Reports tells us. It even reminds us of Volvo’s sophisticated SUVs.
Slightly bigger than the outgoing model, the 2023 Niro offers plenty of room for cargo and passengers. It’s also built on a lighter platform.
The interior is inspired by the
all-electric
Kia EV6. And because of the extra length and larger wheelbase, there’s ample room for all aboard. To offset engine noises, drivers can opt for an eight-speaker Harman/Kardon premium sound system or utilize Active Sound Design.
The new infotainment system can be outfitted with dual 10.25-inch screens. We love it when the instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen flow into one giant screen across the dash. Panoramic views for all.
As we’d expect, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard with an available Heads-Up Display (HUD). Standard active safety and driver assistance features are rumored to be added to the lineup as well.

Other exciting news for Kia

Kia also highlighted its
Telluride SUV
, which has been a standout success for the company since it was first produced in 2019. Because of its affordability and exceptional features, it's one of the most in-demand cars on the market.
Drivers can also look forward to a massive Telluride update.
According to
CNBC
, “The 2023 Telluride increases those offerings, including additional safety and convenience features, a redesigned interior, and updated exterior.” We can also expect two off-road-inspired offerings for the same model year.
The new Telluride is slated to hit the market towards the end of the third quarter, while the Niro models will be available in summer 2022. We’ll have to wait until then for the official pricing.
