The Kia EV6 GT 0-60 Time Rivals the Tesla Model Y

For almost $20,000 less, the Kia EV6 can keep up with a Tesla Model Y. Does that make it the better choice for electric crossovers?

Kia is not the automaker you remember from your youth. Parent company Hyundai has upped the brand’s game over the last few years, and its latest
electric vehicle
, the EV6, continues that pattern.
The Kia EV6 offers the kind of range and features normally only found in luxury vehicles like the
GMC Hummer EV
and Tesla’s models. But the electric crossover’s most impressive spec comes via its GT trim.
In the EV6 GT, adjustments to the powertrain give a 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds, putting it on par with Tesla’s SUV crossover, the Model Y.

Kia EV6 vs. Tesla Model Y: which one’s better?

Like most model comparisons, there’s a little give and take between the Kia EV6 and the
Tesla Model Y
. But a few key differences might help you decide which one best suits your needs.
First and foremost, there’s the difference in range. Both EVs offer above-average travel length between charges, but the Model Y’s maximum range of 330 miles beats the EV6’s 316 miles (as per
Autoblog
).
In terms of passenger and cargo space, the Tesla squeezes into first place again. It comes with an optional third row, though the way-back seats only offer enough space for kids. With the backseat down, it offers two square-feet more trunk space than the EV6.
But when it comes to price, the Kia is the clear winner. Starting just under $41,000, the base EV6 costs almost $20,000 less than the base Model Y. Even the top-accelerating GT trim costs less than the cheapest Model Y, coming in at $55,900.

What else does the Kia EV6 GT offer?

Speed might be the main reason to choose the EV6 GT over the electric vehicle’s other trims, but the powertrain tune isn’t the only upgrade in the GT package.
U.S. News
says the second-to-top trim for the EV6 includes power-retractable door handles, a sunroof, a heads-up display, blindspot monitoring, a 360-degree-view parking system, autonomous parking, and Kia’s semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist software.
The GT comes with an AWD drivetrain and the EV6’s long-range 77.4 kWh battery pack. Autoblog says it reaches 60 mph in 3.5 seconds thanks to Kia’s choice to put two of its most powerful electric motors in the car, giving it a combined 577 hp.
Its 800-volt charging capability allows the battery to go from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes. The charging system is also bi-directional, meaning that it can
power a house
, return energy to the grid, or share juice with other electric cars.

What does it cost to own a Kia EV6?

It’s still too early to give firm numbers on resale value, fuel costs, and car insurance for the Kia EV6, but an estimation, by comparison, should give a good idea of what to expect.
The ownership costs of a Model Y, which benefits from a high resale value and a decent average car insurance rate of $1,800 per year, potentially give would-be EV6 owners pretty good news, especially considering how coverage usually follows starting prices.
