Jeep's Plug-In Hybrid Wrangler Just Dethroned the Toyota RAV4

The Jeep Plug-in hybrid Wrangler 4xe outsold the Toyota RAV4, as the top HPEV in the USA. Will it hold onto the crown for the rest of the year?

Regarding plug-in hybrids, the
Toyota RAV4
was the highest-selling hybrid vehicle. However,
Jeep
, not necessarily known for its plug-in hybrids, knocked Toyota off its throne in the first quarter of 2022.
Jerry
, has all the details about the Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s success and how buyers can save.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe’s successful first quarter

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe came out in 2021. This plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sold 8,346 units in the first quarter of 2022, making up 18% of the Wrangler revenue for that quarter for Jeep (per
Green Car Reports
).
To put that in perspective, the Toyota RAV4 sold 5,233 during that same time period. So what made the Plug-in Hybrid Wrangler 4xe drive off the lots so fast in the first quarter? Especially when many 2021 articles on the car panned its electrical performance and shuddering switch between electrical to hybrid?
It might be the 22 miles of electric power. It could be that Jeep, a brand known for off-roading, ensured that their electric plug-in Hybrid Wrangler could make it off-road. Or it might be the full tax exemption.

Full tax credit for the plug-in Hybrid Wrangler is a big selling point

Plug-in hybrid cars receive a tax credit
for the first 200,000 vehicles sold, from the government. As a result of selling the most plug-in hybrid vehicles and its popularity, Toyota has reached the maximum amount of green vehicles sold.
This means the tax credit for Toyota plug-in hybrid vehicles like the Toyota RAV4 is being phased out of the tax credit program.
Jeep, however, is new to the scene of plug-in hybrid cars. This leaves the Jeep Wrangler 4xe to receive the full tax credit, of $7,500. Due to this tax credit being phased out, Toyota electric cars will become more expensive.
The price for electric vehicles is already steep, not just due to a limited supply and high demand. The plug-in hybrid Wrangler has already jumped in price and is selling well above its manufacturer-suggested retail price.
