Everything You Need to Know About Jeep Electric Cars

Jeep currently doesn’t make any electric vehicles, but they’re looking to release two new EVs for the 2024 model year: the Jeep EV and the Jeep Wrangler EV.

Jeep
currently doesn’t make any electric cars, but their 2024 lineup includes a fully electric Jeep SUV called the Jeep EV and an electric version of the Jeep Wrangler—also called the Magneto.
Jeep has a reputation for some of the most durable and rugged off-roading vehicles, and their slogan, “Go Anywhere,” says it all. However, the gas-guzzling Jeep 4x4s don’t fit well into a market increasingly interested in fuel economy and sustainability. As such, Jeep has more recently been leaning towards an electrified future. They already sell a plug-in hybrid Wrangler, and a fully-electric version shouldn’t be far behind.
They may not have any electric vehicles in their current lineup, but here to take you through Jeep’s future EVs is

Does Jeep have electric cars?

No—Jeep currently does have any fully electric vehicles, but the Jeep EV and the Jeep Wrangler EV—currently a concept called the Magneto—are looking like they’re full steam ahead for a 2024 release.

2024 Jeep EV

Starting price: $35,000 est.
Powertrain: N/A
Driving range: 250 miles (est.)
Charging time: N/A
We don’t know much about Jeep’s newest all-electric vehicle, but it’s currently going by the 2024 Jeep EV—quite an innovative name if you ask us. Although there’s no date set for its release, there’s speculation that drivers could get behind the wheel of one as early as 2023 for a 2024 model.
With a body resembling a more compact version of the
Jeep Compass
, the fully electric SUV still has the classic rugged design with a newly-designed seven-slot grille that lets you know it’s a Jeep. There isn’t much to go on in terms of specs and features, but the Jeep EV will likely come standard with rear-wheel drive and the option to upgrade to all-wheel drive.

2024 Wrangler EV (Magneto)

Starting price: $50,000 est.
Powertrain: N/A
Driving range: N/A
Charging time: N/A
If there’s one Jeep to turn fully electric, the iconic 4x4 off-roading
Wrangler
is it. Jeep already offers a plug-in hybrid version of the Wrangler—the
Wrangler 4xe
—and Jeep’s first electric concept vehicle, the Magneto, seems to be paving the way for this fully-electric version.
Specs and features for the Wrangler EV aren’t yet available, but the Magneto concept featured four chassis-mounted battery packs positioned for optimal weight distribution and rocked a unique EV powertrain with a 285-hp electric motor and a six-speed manual transmission and four battery packs.
While there is potential for that to go through to production, the Wrangler EV is expected to follow along the lines of a more traditional EV powertrain with one or more electric motors, a single battery pack, and no transmission. It’s also expected to follow the classic exterior features of its gas-powered predecessors—two- and four-door body styles, removable doors, and a removable roof for the ultimate open-air driving experience.
Jeep’s parent company, Stellantis, released a video showing the Wrangler EV decked out with a biometric recognition system to confirm the owner's identity and allow it to start up. There have also been hints that the Wrangler EV may have the capability to recharge other EVs, although nothing is confirmed or set in stone.

How to decide if going electric is right for you

Although Jeep doesn’t yet offer any electric vehicles, they’re definitely in the works, and while you may be a die-hard Jeep fan, their electric cars may not be up your alley. If you’ve always wanted to get behind the wheel of a Jeep, but you’ve been waiting for a more fuel-efficient version like the EV, here are some questions to ask yourself before you pull the (future) trigger:
  • Do you have access to public charging stations? Having a charging station at home is one of the best and most convenient options for charging your EV, but having access to a public charging station can be vital when you're on the go.
  • How many miles do you drive each day? The driving range of your EV is an important consideration for drivers that put on a lot of mileage. If you regularly run the road, you’ll need to consider an EV with a high driving range to fit your lifestyle conveniently.
  • How often do you go on trips over 200-300 miles? Most EVs—except for Tesla’s—have a driving range of under 300 miles. If you’re frequently putting on mileage, charging might become problematic.
  • Do you have a garage at home? You need a garage or a driveway if you're charging an EV. If you park on the street, finding a space to charge at home will be impossible.
  • Do you need a vehicle with towing capacity? Jeeps are built for rugged, off-road adventures, but Jeeps don’t have the best
    towing capacity
if you need to tow. When you turn them electric, towing will seriously decrease the driving range.
There are several benefits to buying an electric Jeep, such as the $7,500 federal tax credit for owning an EV in addition to other rebates and incentives from local and state governments. You should also consider their lower operating and maintenance costs, and, of course, getting to drive one of the best off-roading vehicles known to man without the fuel costs. However, EVs tend to have higher upfront costs and require you to figure out more logistics when it comes to driving range and charging
There are currently no set prices or release dates for either of Jeep’s electric vehicles. If you’re antsy to get your eco-friendly off-roading adventure going, the
Jeep Wrangler 4xe
could fit the bill! It’s Jeep’s first-ever plug-in hybrid featuring all the same perks of the classic Wranglers, but better for your wallet and the environment.
