Jaguar I-PACE vs. Tesla Model Y: Range and EPA

The 2022 Jaguar I-PACE handles like a sports car, with tactile steering and a controlled demeanor. The five-seat crossover features a standard all-wheel drive with two electric motors pumping out 394 hp and 512 lb-ft of torque.
“That energy provides quick and effortless acceleration to zip between city stoplights and pass slowpokes on the highway,” according to
Car and Driver
. Its standard air suspension makes for a comfy ride and drivers will find the steering feedback satisfying. And with a low center of gravity, the Jag is agile and stable.
The I-PACE works with a 90.0-kWh battery pack resulting in a 253-mile driving range. In about 40 minutes, you can recharge the battery to 80% thanks to its included DC fast-charging port. According to Car and Driver, “Those without access to the fastest charging option will have to wait a claimed 8.6 hours to fully replenish the battery using the more common 240-volt AC outlet.”
The 2022 I-PACE gets a combined EPA of 76 MPGe, with 80 MPGe in the city and 72 MPGe on the highway.
As far as the Tesla Model Y, it doesn’t come with a standard range model. Buyers must choose either the Performance or Long-Range (LR) trim.
According to
Car and Driver
, “The EPA estimates that the Long Range model is good for 131 MPGe in the city and 117 MPGe on the highway, while the Performance model's fuel economy estimates are 115 MPGe city and 106 MPGe highway.”
The LR model has a steep price of $57,990, but you will get a 330-mile driving range. In fact, with a combined hp of 434 (483 hp on the Performance), the LR offers more power to the rear axle than to the one on the front.
With a top speed of 135 mph, the Model Y LR can hit 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds. And takes 3.6 seconds for the Performance trim to hit 60 mph, with a top speed of 155 mph.
According to Car and Driver, “The SUV body creates a higher center of gravity, which dulls the sharp edge of the Model 3's handling, and the Y's ride is considerably rougher over road imperfections as well.” While the EV is still fast, thrill-seeking drivers may find driving the Model Y less satisfying than the popular Model 3.

Jaguar I-PACE vs. Tesla Model Y: Classy interiors

The Jaguar’s interior features cutting-edge design, with lots of room for passengers and a flashy dash. The cabin is sophisticated, with bolstered front seats that are more for show than comfort.
“Of course, the I-PACE can be outfitted with many desirable features such as four-zone climate control, a head-up display, heated front, and rear seats, various choices of leather upholstery, and more,” according to Car and Driver.
The center console is versatile and offers a tray below the center stacks and a practical bin under the armrest. Seven carry-on suitcases can fit in the cargo area and you can fit 18 with the rear seats folded down.
Each I-PACE model includes a touch-sensitive 10.0-inch upper screen for audio and a 5.5-inch lower display for the cabin’s climate. The infotainment system also notifies drivers of charging station locations and their estimated cost, charging time, etc.
Drivers will receive a standard 825-watt Meridian sound system, as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
The Model Y has a sleek and functional airy cabin. The iconic glass roof is stunning and the cabin features 72 cubic feet of cargo space and a HEPA air filtration system. You can also look forward to standard power-adjustable front seats, heated front, and rear seats, and LED fog lamps.
The minimalist hatchback features second-row seats that fold flat and the ability to accommodate seven people. But like the Model 3, backseat passengers just don’t get the same level of comfort as those riding in the front seat.
The SUV has a stunning 15.4-inch touchscreen with “embedded Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube apps as well as video games perfect for killing time while waiting for the battery to charge at the public charging station,” according to Car and Driver.

Off by one point

The 2022 Jaguar I-PACE is only offered in the top-of-the-line HSE trim starting at $71,050. Tesla’s Long Range Model goes for $64,440 and the Performance trim is about $69,440.
The Model Y received an overall score of 59 from
Consumer Reports
, while the I-PACE scored a close 58. The two vehicles are tied in various categories including acceleration, transmission, routine handling, and climate control. The Model Y beat the I-PACE in its road test score by eight points, yet fell behind when it came to reliability, ride, and usability.
So when it comes to the Jaguar I-PACE vs. Tesla Model Y, which should you choose? If you’re a tech-lover and like some giddyup in your powertrain, the Tesla Model Y might be a great choice. However, its handling isn’t as engaging as we would have hoped and feels (dare we say) quite lazy when compared to the Tesla Model 3.
If you can afford it, the Jaguar I-PACE electric crossover makes a statement. It’s quick, serene and is a graceful, engaging drive.
