The standard model Fusion became an American-made staple sedan during its almost 15-year run—so it stands to reason that a plug-in hybrid version could be even better, right? Let’s look over the details of the 2020 Fusion PHEV.

Pricing

While the standard-engine 2020 Fusion started with an affordable MSRP of $28,000, the Titanium PHEV version started at a smooth $34,595—almost $6,595 more expensive. Even factoring in the amount of gas money you’d be saving, this is still fairly pricey—especially compared to its competitors.

Plenty of 2020 Fusion Titanium PHEVs are available on the used market, averaging a price anywhere between $24,000 and $30,000 depending on the vehicle’s condition and buyer’s location. However, despite being a couple of years old, many are still more expensive than a brand new

If you decide against a 2020 PHEV, one benefit of buying a new model is you may qualify for a federal income tax credit worth a few thousand dollars depending on the model year, softening the blow of the purchase price.

Performance and fuel economy

The 2020 Ford Fusion Titanium Plug-In Hybrid certainly looks like the regular Fusion, but it doesn’t quite feel like it. The PHEV has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery. Altogether, these produce 188 horsepower, creating a decently smooth ride and acceleration—though it pales in comparison to the standard Fusion.

What usually makes all the difference for PHEVs, though, is their fuel economy. The 2020 Fusion PHEV gets a gas-only 42 combined mpg and 103 MPGe with both gas and electricity. This is decent when compared to an average sedan, but it’s slightly less than competitors’ fuel ratings.

PHEVs are different from standard hybrids because they can drive for short distances on electricity alone. With the battery, the Fusion PHEV can go 26 miles. This is a great range if you have a relatively short daily commute—and it’s one more mile than the Toyota Prius Prime’s electric-only range.

That range won’t do you any good, though, if you don’t have a reliable way to charge your PHEV. With a Level 2 (240V) charger, the Fusion Titanium will take five hours to fully charge. With a Level 1 (120V), it’ll take a whopping 25 hours to reach 100%.

If you’re married to the idea of driving a Ford, the Fusion PHEV is a good enough option, but the numbers fall in the favor of almost any rival.

Exterior styling

The 2020 Fusion and Fusion hybrids keep it simple and chic in terms of exterior styling, making eco-friendliness seem much more approachable than other brands. With smooth lines and a stylish boldness that matches the Ford brand, the Fusion is a recognizable sight on the road.

The 2020 Fusion Titanium comes in eight colors: Agate Black Metallic, Alto Blue Metallic Tinted, Iconic Silver Metallic, Magnetic Metallic, Oxford White, Rapid Red Metallic Tinted, Velocity Blue Metallic, and White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat.

Interior and comfort

The Fusion PHEV isn’t the most spacious sedan out there, but with leather upholstery and a wide cabin, you’ll definitely be comfortable. Headroom in the front is generous, though taller passengers may have trouble in the back seat.

The trunk has a meager 8.2 cubic feet of cargo space, and the back seats can fold down if you need extra room.

Here’s where the Fusion PHEV shines. Though it takes a bit to start up, the infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly with features like Bluetooth, satellite radio, HD radio, a premium sound system, a navigation display, and in-car Wi-Fi capability.

The standard 2020 Fusion comes in five different trim levels, but the Plug-In Hybrid only comes in the top Titanium trim. Since this is the highest trim, it’s stacked with every feature you could need, including heated front seats, leather upholstery, a heated steering wheel, and heated and cooled seats.

The bottom line

While the Ford Fusion Plug-In Hybrid comes with tons of luxury-level features, it’s not the best PHEV available on the market—and its price tag doesn’t help. If you find a sweet deal on a Fusion Titanium, it may be worth it. However, there are other PHEVs on the market that are more affordable and more efficient.
