Are electric cars accessible? Within the automotive world, this is one of the biggest ongoing debates among
car owners
Not only do potential buyers need to have some form of home charging setup, but access to a
nationwide charging network
of convenient fast-charging stations for trips away from home.
A robust charging network is already lacking in many parts of the country, but there may be an even bigger issue at stake if the existing charging stations are prone to failure. According to a new report from
J.D. Power
, that may be the case.
Read on with Jerry to find out what EV drivers said about the current state of charging networks in America, and what it means for the future of electric cars.

Drivers blame faulty equipment for charging failures

Gas prices are high, and many Americans are struggling to make ends meet with increased automotive expenses, so why aren’t more people switching to electric cars?
The cost of a new car aside, gas stations can be found scattered across the nation. Unlike charging stations, which you often need an app to locate, drivers of gas-powered cars have the peace of mind that they can fill up almost anywhere, and do so in under a few minutes.
Electric car charging networks are growing every day, but there may be a deeper issue in their ongoing functionality.
Out of 11,550 drivers surveyed by J.D. Power, a whopping one in five drivers were unable to charge their vehicle at a recent charging station visit. Of those drivers, 72% blamed faulty equipment for charging failures.

Public charging is one of the biggest hurdles to EV adoption

Without a robust and reliable nationwide charging network, the road to mass electric vehicle adoption is going to be a long one.
“Public charging continues to provide challenges to overall EV adoption,” Brent Gruber, executive director of global automotive at J.D. Power, as reported by
Bloomberg
. “We need to make sure those stations are reliable.”
The Biden administration signed an infrastructure law that allocates $5 billion to build out EV charging ports, but will it be enough? The J.D. Power survey suggests that some car buyers remain skeptical.
Among electric car drivers that report the highest levels of satisfaction are Tesla owners. It makes sense, as the brand has devoted much of its time and energy into creating a
highly customer-centric charging network
, and consistently ranks as
the best charging experience
for users. Tesla’s charging network was previously exclusive to Tesla owners, but
a nudge from the White House
seems to have changed that.
