Hertz Has Been Really Benefitting From Renting Out Teslas

As Hertz says, it lowered its emissions, not standards. The company’s recent partnership with Tesla has proved to be a smart move. What EVs will they purchase next?

Hertz and Tesla partnership

In October 2021, Hertz announced a deal to buy 100,000 Model 3 Teslas. These autos are available at select U.S. airports in California, Georgia, Florida, and D.C. (Dulles). And now, the Tesla Model Y has been added to its growing electric vehicle collection.
The Model Y can seat up to seven people, gets up to a 330-mile range, and boasts 471 lb-ft of torque. That’s a better range than the Model 3, which comes in at 260 miles.
The Long Range model gets about 131 mpg in town and 117 mpg on the highway. The Performance model comes with 115 mpg in the city and 106 mpg on the highway.
The midsize SUV features an AWD dual-motor powertrain and a convenient Supercharger network for long-distance drives. You won’t get falcon-wing doors like the Model X, but you will get an interior very similar to the best-selling Model 3.
The Tesla Model Y has spacious seating, ample cargo storage, and an airy cabin. Though it's small and lacks LATCH safety anchors, the auto does offer an option for a third-row seat.
You’ll also want to make sure not to get too fixated on the touchscreen-focused controls, as even owners of the Model Y are known to get distracted.
While Tesla’s stock skyrocketed at the time (surpassing $1 trillion in market value), Hertz wasn’t offered a special deal to purchase these vehicles. Hertz planned to receive its entire order of Model 3s by the end of 2022. However, Tesla may not be 100% on board with this timeline.
In April, Hertz also announced its plan to add 65,000 Polestar EVs to its offerings over the course of the next five years.

Q2 and Hertz’s growing Tesla fleet

According to Hertz CEO Stephen Scherr, the company is continuing to take Tesla deliveries at this time. Scherr also confirmed that Hertz has gained countless repeat customers who want to rent Teslas again, and more frequently.
This is due in part to Hertz’s commitment to educating renters who’ve never driven the unique EV before or any EV for that matter.
Hertz has rented Tesla electric vehicles for over 160,000 days. Customers have also rated the EVs and their experience much higher than other Hertz rentals they’ve used in the past.
Teslas booked through Hertz are charged at a premium rate, which is about $30 to $35 more than comparable average rates. And the Tesla experience, expressed in Net Promoter Score (NPS), received 10 points more than the global average.
While the company hopes to expand, for now, its primary focus is on its best-selling Tesla packages and upcoming Polestars. Stay tuned for even larger electric vehicle purchases for Hertz in the near future.
