Does GMC have electric cars?

Yes! As of 2022, GMC has one all-electric car with solid plans to release more in the future. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV is a powerful pickup truck, and the Hummer EV SUV is set to hit dealerships in early 2023. The brand also has plans for a Sierra EV pickup truck, though the exact release date hasn’t been nailed down.

that was discontinued in 2010? Well, it’s been resurrected for 2022—but this time with an impressively powerful all-electric powertrain.

If you think opting for an electric vehicle means you’ll need to sacrifice top performance, think again. This truck’s three electric motors will get you from 0 to 60 in 3.0 seconds flat, offering 1,000 horsepower at the lineup’s top trim level.

Aesthetically, this Hummer looks like a modern version of the SUV we know and love—but includes a crew cab and a five-foot-long bed.

At launch, only the top trim—the Edition 1—will be available. However, lower trim levels with less powerful two-motor drivetrains are set to launch in the fall of 2022, 2023, and 2024. The least expensive powertrain will have a starting MSRP of $79,995.

2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV

Starting price: $79,995

Powertrain: Two or three electric motors with an estimated 625 horsepower

Driving range: Over 300 miles

Charging time: Fast-charging capabilities add 100 miles of range in 12 minutes when connected to an 800v compatible charger

The first edition of the GMC Hummer EV SUV is set to hit dealerships in early 2023, the same time as lower trim levels of the pickup truck are expected to be released.

Exact details have yet to be released, but drivers can expect 635 horsepower and 1,000 to 1,100 lb-ft of torque. Compared to the pickup truck, it’ll have a shorter wheelbase, which will likely make it more maneuverable in parking situations and out on the trails.

The optional Extreme Off-Road package will bring special hardware that includes 18-inch wheels and 35-inch all-terrain tires, extra underbody protection, low-mounted cameras for improved visibility, enhanced axles, a locking front differential, and rear motors.

How do GMC’s electric cars compare to competitors?

While electric pickup trucks are relatively new to the road, there are still some major competitors to compare GMC’s Hummer to.

Which EV pickup truck (or SUV) is best for you depends a lot on your personal preferences and priorities as a driver. If you’re looking for the nostalgic styling of the Hummer from the early 2000s, then GMC’s EV is a no-brainer—but if you want affordability, or even more classic pickup truck styling, there may be better options.

The 2022 Rivian R1T starts at $79,500 and boasts four electric motors, lighting quick acceleration, up to 835 horsepower, and a driving range of up to 314 miles. These stats are quite similar to GMC’s pickup but are offered at a much cheaper price.

How to decide if going electric is right for you

If GMC’s specs sound great and the price tag seems affordable, you might feel ready to head to the dealership and sign the dotted line. Before doing so, however, ask yourself the following questions to ensure that an EV is the right option for you:

Are there public charging stations in your area? A home charging station is perhaps the most convenient, but it will take much longer than public DC fast chargers. Plus, you don’t want to be stranded out in public with zero options for charging.

How far is your daily drive? You don’t want to drive around in a state of anxiety each and every day, worried that your battery will run out of charge. If your daily miles are well under your EV’s maximum driving range, then it could be a great fit! If you travel far and are cutting it close, you may be creating a daily headache for yourself.

Do you regularly need to drive over 200-300 miles? Most people don’t put hundreds of miles on their vehicle in a single day, but if you frequently take weekend road trips or travel long distances for work, scheduling charging times may be a major inconvenience.

Do you have a place for a home charging station? Most EV owners install at-home charging stations, but this has to be done in a garage. You won’t be able to charge at home if you rely entirely on street parking.

How much towing capacity do you need? Electric trucks and SUVs do offer significant towing capacities, but it’s important to note that towing heavy loads will significantly decrease your overall driving range. If you intend to tow on the regular, an EV might not be the most practical bet.

Of course, there are ample benefits to owning an electric GMC—a $7,500 federal tax credit, additional rebates and incentives from your local and state governments and/or power companies, lower operating costs, and a fun and quiet driving experience, just to name a few.

On the other hand, electric vehicles tend to cost much more money upfront, and charging can be time-consuming and—at times—a logistical headache.

In addition to plans for lower-trim Hummer EV pickups and a Hummer EV SUV, GMC plans to launch a 2023 Sierra EV with an estimated starting price of about $55,000. This more classic pickup truck is rumored to boast an even-more-powerful three-motor setup than the Hummer on its highest trim levels.
