While American automaker Tesla may sell the most electric cars worldwide, China
continues to lead
the global electric vehicle industry.
Though most Chinese companies don’t ship to the U.S., they’re making serious headway in Asian and European markets, and many of those companies are also at the forefront of developing new EV
technology
Green Car Congress
reported that Chinese automaker Geely did just that, as the company launched a new methanol-battery hybrid sedan to the Chinese market. Compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, methanol vehicles allow for a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Jerry to learn more about Geely, why the brand is making methanol-powered vehicles, and what this means for the future of sustainable vehicles.

Why is Geely making methanol-battery hybrids?

Geely, which is China’s largest private automaker, has been testing methanol-powered engines alongside lithium batteries.
The reasoning behind creating a methanol-battery hybrid is two-pronged: being able to use methanol-powered engines would improve China’s energy independence, as the country has large reserves of coal that can be converted into methanol.
Geely also proposes that methanol vehicles are cleaner than gasoline-powered vehicles.
According to Green Car Congress, the company has invested ten years and the equivalent of $470 million USD into methanol vehicle development. In addition to methanol-powered vehicles, Geely is also developing battery electric vehicles, hybrid cars, and
hydrogen fuel cell vehicles
.
“Clean methanol from green and renewable sources is the most realistic and effective path to reducing emissions and achieving carbon neutrality,” said Eric Li, Chairman of Geely Holding Group as reported by Green Car Congress.
“The advantages of methanol fuel are not theoretical and have been proven for decades in applications around the world. Methanol fuel choices offer the world a road to a greener and more sustainable future.

How does the Geely methanol hybrid work?

The new Methanol Hybrid Emgrand is based on Geely Auto’s fourth-generation B-Segment Modular Architecture (BMA) Emgrand sedan and runs on 100% clean methanol available at fueling stations.
The new hybrid vehicles combine Geely’s methanol and NordThor Power hybrid technology, creating a vehicle with both low operating costs and low emissions.
The 1.8-liter naturally aspirated methanol engine and electric motor provide a combined 364 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque.
The engine and motor are connected to a 3-speed Dedicated Hybrid Transmission, which automatically switches between electric and engine power to utilize maximum efficiency.
The methanol engine acts as a range extender at low speeds and a power booster at high speeds, allowing it to operate efficiently and with the lowest amount of emissions. The hybrid Emgrand goes from 0-100km in 8.8 seconds and consumes roughly 9 liters of clean methanol per 100 kilometers.
Methanol fuel prices at Chinese pumps are around $1.80 U.S. dollars per gallon, meaning it only costs about $4.28 on average for every 100 kilometers driven.

Getting car insurance for an EV

While methanol-powered vehicles aren’t available in North American markets, you can always make the switch to a
hybrid or electric vehicle
to save on gas expenses.
One drawback to making the switch is that insuring an EV can be more expensive than a comparable gas-powered car. That’s where
