While that’s not exactly unusual in the increasingly competitive electric vehicle
segment, not every startup has made it to the point of actually releasing a car. In 2021, Lucid managed to bring both an electric sedan, the Lucid Air, and an SUV, the Lucid Gravity
, to market. Not only that, but the specs on the Lucid air blew every other existing EV out of the water. The Lucid Air received rave ratings and reviews for its impressive design, powerful powertrain, and luxe interior, among other things. It also became the first-ever electric car to earn an EPA estimated mileage range of over 500 miles.
The flagship Dream Edition models also sported an astronomic price tag of over $169,000. Upon launching its flagship model, Lucid announced that three other trim levels would be available at different price tiers in 2022, the $139,000 Grand Touring, $95,000 Touring, and $80,000 Air.

According to Motortrend
, the man behind Lucid Air’s success is Lucid's chief executive officer and chief technology officer, Peter Rawlinson. Rawlinson is a former principal engineer at Jaguar, and chief engineer at Lotus, and even designed the electric drivetrain for the Tesla Model S.
Rawlinson then set out on his own to create the Lucid Air. The design was the antithesis of Tesla, offering a maximalist interior that features a thin, wraparound digital display that appears in the driver’s line of vision.
The screens are divided into three designated zones to control the driving data, lightning controls, and infotainment separately, unlike Tesla’s all-in-one touchscreen.
The 2021 Lucid Air delivered a reported 451-520 miles of range from its 118 and 112 kWh batteries, but a 92-kWh battery offering around 400 miles of range was to come with future models. The combined 1080 horsepower can take this car from zero to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds, and the proprietary 350-kW Electrify America station can recharge 300 miles in just 20 minutes.
What’s new for the 2022 Lucid Air
While Lucid was pushing its most expensive models first, the new Lucid Air lineup is aiming to be more affordable and offer a more conservative range of batteries and powertrains.
According to Car and Driver
, the real pricing for the 2022 Lucid Air is slightly above the 2021 estimates, but that’s not too surprising considering even Tesla raised prices across the board. The base model, Lucid Air Pure, starts at $89,050 followed by Touring at $109,050, Grand Touring at $155,650, and Grand Touring Performance at $180,650.
The Touring model sports 20-inch wheels, leather upholstery, in-dash navigation, and 406 miles of estimated driving range per charge. All models come standard with three years of free charging through the Electrify America charging network.
The new Pure and Touring models offer a more modest powertrain. The new entry-level models are powered by a single electric motor that produces 480 horsepower. The Touring model generates 620 horses, while the Grand Touring makes 1050.
The base Pure and mid-range Touring trims each have an estimated driving range of 406 miles, while the Grand Touring model offers up to 516 miles of range.
