background
Honda
has been looking to introduce more electric vehicles, and it seems they’ve found their opportunity. The manufacturer has singled out the European market for a new Honda Civic, though it's not like ones we’ve seen before.
European countries have been pressuring automakers to go electric through climate change
legislation and incentives
meant to reduce emissions. Honda will start by going hybrid with the new Civic. Let's explore the features of the new model.

The 2023 Honda Civic will be a hatchback

The 2023 Honda Civic hybrid that is debuting in Europe this fall will only be offered in a
hatchback
style. It will have a sloped roof style at the back and a slightly lifted rear, allowing the hatchback to blend smoothly with the rest of the car.
Honda will use the same platform it uses in creating the American Honda Civics to make these models. However, it will not sell this version in the American and Australian markets—it’s expected that there will be versions of the car for other markets in the future.
As
AutoJosh
explains, Honda sold only 18,685 units of the Insight hybrid model in 2021, and the carmaker may be looking to replace the model with a better car to improve sales. Therefore, the hybrid hatchback or sedan may find its way to the U.S. market later.

The engine specifications for the 2023 Honda Civic

According to
MotorTrend
, this hybrid vehicle will run on a 72-cell lithium-ion battery with one motor at the back and the other one at the front. The electric motors will be connected to an upgraded Atkinson-cycle type engine. This combined engine will provide 181 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque, just fine for a general-use car.
The hybrid version of this efficient model will have improved internal combustion that enables it to reach 41% thermal efficiency, which is the industry's leading percentage for any car that is currently in production.
It also has other improved parts, including new power controls and power management units. The new parts are more intelligent, smaller, and lighter, which goes a long way to lowering friction and enhancing performance.
Honda believes that the new system will enable forceful acceleration and quick torque. Its fixed gear transmission, which is managed by the power control unit, enables the vehicle to adapt to the conditions of the road in order to give a smooth ride while enhancing the vehicle's efficiency.

What are the target emissions for the 2023 Honda Civic?

Autoevolution
notes that the automaker strives to achieve an average of less than 110 grams of CO2 released into the atmosphere for each kilometer the Honda Civic travels. With this target, it means that the vehicle will be able to hit an average combined efficiency of over 47 mpg. It will also have a fuel consumption of less than 5 liters per 100 kilometers.
The Honda Civic will use various drive modes to help achieve optimum efficiency based on the driving conditions. Its powertrain will seamlessly change from Eco to Normal, Individual, or Sport drive modes without the need for driver input.
